9/16 thread size tap needed

Dont think you would get away with it. Unless you wanted to use 1/2 pedals. When I've used helicoils in the past you have to make the hole bigger to accept the coil. So you would probably have to drill out the original thread to re-cut a new thread for the coil.
I would try running a tap down the thread. Although a left handed tap might be difficult to track down.

Didn't some 3 piece cranks have 1/2" threads ??? i know they weren't that common but do remember them ;)
Have you tried an 1/2" pedal in them :-\
