Is there a safe effective way of removing the cups/bearings with no damage at all

I use a long bolt and tap lightly round the edge on  the inside from through the bearing on the opposite side

but sometimes need to hit/tap quite hard , which could result in damage it it slips off the slim outer collar edge  :-\

there is a special tool available for removal of head set cups (will get a pic later) or you can use a wide screw driver and go around gently like you say.
for BB cups i find a 1/2" drift works best  :daumenhoch:
