Spoke lengths . . .
« on: April 19, 2011, 12:17 PM »
Hi all - I have a bit of a problem and I hope you guys and girls can help me out.
I stripped a pair of original Weinmann rims, with Sturmy Archer hubs (from a Mk1 Raleigh Super Burner - The gold coloured one) down at the weekend with a view to refurbishing them.
Due to the ammount of corossion all the spokes either were or did bend very badly or snapped off (either at the nipple, or between 2-3" up from the nipple) leaving me with a load of uslelss spokes that I cant guarantee to get an accurate measure of to allow me to replace them.

Would anyone know for sure how long the spokes need to be so I can order up some replacements?

Pleas help!

Are they a large flange or small flange hub?

You may find this info on burnerworld, I think they have a tech data section.

For a 3 cross pattern with low flange hubs you need 194mm or if they are high flange (prob not) then you will need 183mm for a  3 cross pattern..

Cheers guys!
I am pretty sure the are small flange hubs

I have cropped out a photo of a (pre assembled) wheel and the hub so you can see

194mm sounds like what it is then :)

Buy yourself one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6-Inch-150-MM-Digital-Vernier-Caliper-Carbon-Fibre-/300539288266?pt=UK_Measuring_Tools_Levels&hash=item45f9899aca

Have a look here for the calculator:

http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/

And here for the A,B,C,D etc help:

http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/help2.html  - edit - see the 'help' button on that page - linky doesn't take you to it for some reason.....

And then goole your rim name and 'ERD'

Looks complicated but'll help you verify before buying  :daumenhoch:

Cheers guys!
I guess the safest way will be to piece together the bits I have and see if I can get an idea of length
If that is inconclusive then to measure then up as dannywhac suggests
