14mm axle to fit 10mm forks?

Thats a bit risky tho  ??? you can't be that precise with the ol'grinder - as you pointed out Dan I'd only ever do it on solid axles to be honest.

why not take the forks out to 14mm if there is enough meat on the dropouts?

There's not. The drop outs are pretty slim.

I'll see if the bike shop can sort out an axle & bearings, if not, just wait for the right cheapish wheel to come along.

I'd be taking the grinder to the forks. It's only 2mm either side.

Stick a photo of the forks up, let's have a look.
