Black Seat Spray, What Finish and What Paint??

Had a NOS Purple GT, I wanted to Dye it black, I have tried dyeing it 3 times now, and it wont go any darker, looks like a dark Brown, Ive been using Rit, think I am just gonna paint it, its going on a show pony so wont be ridden, I need it black, just want to know what finish you think I would need and the best paint to do it, any help guys would be much appreciated!!

I've got some aerosol spray dye to try out on some sharp griplocks
Hopefully at some point it will stop pissing down enough for me to paint them and report back on whether it works  :D
