1 pc & 3 pc BB fitting kits. (stupid question probably)
Funkyworm:
Ok so I need some new shiny bb cups to go on my new build,
I have my crank (Sugino ct 175) & it came with the spindle bearings etc , in fact everything including the fitting bolts etc but no BB cups.
I'm assuming that all USA BB cups are the same whether a 3piece or 1piece crank is to be used ????
When you see a full kit being advertised I'm assuming it's the fitting hardware thats differentiates a 1pc to a 3piece kit as 3 piece cranks use a spindle which is narrower than the internal part of a 1 piece crank arm hence the fitting bolts etc have a smaller diameter .....
Basically can i use any BB cup ???
Cheers

pickle:
okay, i think (and someone will correct me if i'm wrong) that all loose ball BB's use the same cups.
Sealed bearing US BB's use a completely diferent sort of cup as the face that the bearing sits on is machined flat rather than a rounded cup for loose ball cages.
hope that makes sense (and is correct) :daumenhoch:
Jaan:
I've heard the argument that Tange BB's use "proper" Tange cups but personally I think that was tosh as i've swapped so many around over the years but left the cups in situ and i've never had a problem - thats talking loose ball.
Sealed is a different matter and the internal cup profile can vary depending on the manufacturer - I always remove the cups that came with a sealed BB and keep the sets together.
pickle:
agree, with sealed bearings that have cups rather than new school where most of them press into the frame, i would keep the cups with the bearings :daumenhoch:
