the pitting will be from the caustic soda, if there was scratches in the paint, the caustic will have sneaked through and attacked the anno.

same thing happened to me with a chainring that was laquered red.

i would probably use proggressively finer grades of wet and dry to get out the pitting then autosol cuting paste, then peek,

if its for a show bike. if not just give it a go over with the autosol.
