Totally gutted about this

What a pisser but all is not lost and it can be repaired with a little of the skills in guys like Steve (Animal) and Phil (Sawzall).
In terms of what to do about the damage, write it off as a lesson learnt and make sure you tell everyone on here to avoid them like the plague, never recommend them to anyone, maybe tak in a a real shitter of a job for them to bead blast and never collect it.
Life is too short to take this as anything more than them being incompetent; don't waste your time and energy on their stupidity as that is way too expensive and precious to you and your family.

But the boss may not know anything about it if the young lad did it, he might compensate you straight away

Just go and speak to them, let them know what has happened and you want an answer as to how it happened.
Try to get some compensation, if they dont want to play ball then tell them that you will let everyone know how irresponsible they are with people's property, calmly walk away and give the local rag a call. Give them as much negative exposure as possible.
But give them the chance first. See how much integrity they have as a company.
