Tell me about....Freecoasters
laidback:
Hi chaps,
I've been a little slack recently with contributing to this forum, so i thought i'd post up about Freecoasters. Having wanted to get back into some old Flatland riding...only basic stuff :LolLolLolLol:..Someone suggested i lace a freecoaster hub into a set of 48's i'm going to build.
Any pro's/con's with these? I can imagine them having a bit of 'slack' like the coaster brakes do. Are they just a coaster with the brake shoes removed?
Cheeeeeers. :daumenhoch:
Biggeorge:
The vast majority are based on the coaster with the shoes out. The new ones from ezra/vocal work on a cassette system but instead of the pawls being sprung out, they are sprung in and forced out by small Rams when you pedal.
Slack is adjustable on all.
This site is good but well out if date now.

Give us a pm if you want any info. I've been using coasters and freecoasters for nearly 30years and have modded a few too.

Cheers George, i'll have a read, I'm eying up a Peregrine one. Are the sprockets the same as those for coasters, held on with a circular clip?
Biggeorge:
The modern ones are all one machined piece.
have you got a link for the peregrine one? they did one donkeys ago so might be worth giving it a swerve and going for a cheapy more modern one off the evil bay.
Although not perfect the modern ones are more reliable, the old peregrine one might be more suited to a carpet queen/museum.
Gnarlyscoots:
Hey buddy,
Are you building an old school wheel, mid school or new?
I assume when you say peregrine, you mean the late eighties, early nineties hub?
On a Tuff wheel, to freecaost, you just move the pedal back slightly after pedalling. This allows you to roll backwards without having to pedal backwards, then just press back hard to brake.
If you remove the brake shoes, it allows you to fully freecoast.
I think the Peregrine hub would be along the same lines :)
