Hutch Knurled & unknurled bars
alst:
Hi Guys,
Could one of you be so kind as to explain the difference (ideally with pics) between knurled & unknurled bars (Hutch to be precise!)
Sorry for the silly question, but can’t really find a clear description online!!
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Regards,
Alst

have'nt a picture but its the area where the bars clamp to the stem
knurled= cross hatch patten where they clamp
un-knurled= just a plain finish

Most of the knurled Hutch bars (even pro sized ones) are pro raider bars. I think they were made of regular steel, not cromoly. Because they are pro size, they are often advertised for sale wrongly as pro racer bars. There is quite a bit of difference in price (pro racer bars are more expensive), so be careful you're not being conned if you're looking to buy some. I think some of the very late foreign made pro racer bars were knurled, but i've never seen a set of them.

Hutch Pro Bars...
First gen are more round on the bottom = 1981 - 1982,
Second gen are more squared off, kind of boxy, if you will = late 1982 - late 1984,
Third gen look like second gen but have a thicker cross bar = late 1984 - 1986.
None of them are knurled. Someone once told me "Knurling is for lazy designers who make poor fitting components". :daumenhoch:
