Spence have you tried taking the cones off the rear and to see if they fit the front?

Also if you do take the cones off it will help to clean the thread.

Put a rule along the axle and count the threads to work out the thread pitch 10 x 1 mm are 10 to the CM and 26 TPI are 26 to the Inch.
