Best 24 retro cruiser for riding and keeping fit?
« on: February 22, 2015, 03:23 PM »
Hi chaps.
I am looking into getting a cruiser but really want something either old school or retro looking. I need something that's good to ride Regularly as I want to loose some fat but still look cool :) I had a 26 quadangle cruiser but I didn't like the way it rode. It seemed that it was too easy to pedal and it didn't move very far if that makes sense  :crazy2: i have seen a few 24 cruisers and would really like a quadangle again but have only seen three up for sale. One is a 2009 quadangle and the other two are the dc quadangle and there is the  2015 freestyle quad but they seem to be sold out of those. I am hoping that this time I might be able to modify the one I get to make it harder to pedal and move the fastest  sorry for being a newbie and not knowing too much and thanks for any advice and help. Some pics would be great too :daumenhoch:

I have the 2011 24" Quadangle and find it quite comfortable to ride . Pretty sure that you should be able to change the gearing without too much fuss , but haven't bothered looking into it myself ......

quite simple to make the gearing "higher" i.e. harder to pedal/higher top speed....either fit a larger chain ring up front, or a smaller freewheel / cog on rear. the rear option would depend whether the bike you buy has a old school style screw on freewheel or a cassette hub. if it has a screw on style freewheel you may be limited to the size options available to fit that particular hub. if you go the larger chainring up front you may have to fit a few extra links to the chain as it will require the chain to be longer, the opposite applies if you change your freewheel, may need to remove a link, or may just need to move the wheel further back in the droputs to take up the slack.
when you do buy a bike, start a new thread and you can get more appropriate advice then....hope this helps, regards, Neil.

Its all about gearing, I built myself a cruiser last year & set it up with a 42 /16 gear ratio & its lovely .
Theres a lovely rare Wilson frame in the for sale section,  it's sweet.

Here's my 24" Akisu or (RICKMAN FAUX)... I rode it all last summer & cant wait to get on it again in Spring, easy gearing on the flat & you can get a decent head of speed if you want.

Pretty easy to change the gearing to make it harder to pedal, replace the chainwheel with one with more teeth.

Tony (Torkerdude180) had a quad 24 and hated it  , i rode it and wasn't that impressed at all tbh when i compared it to my retro Skyway 24 . I do like the Flovals but have never ridden one .  I'd try as many as you can before parting with your cash to see which one you like best  ;)

You could do worse than a mid 2000ish GT . They are cheap ( I think I paid £28 for my frame ) and you can build it how you want .
Looking for Blue and Lavender metal hubbed orphan rear Tuff 2s ... help !

Most of these bikes come/came with a pretty standard BMX gearing, I would be wary of making the gearing too much higher unless you're very sure your knees etc are up to it. You can go pretty quick on the standard gearings as long as you have fairly good pedalling form. Also unless you're small, you will probably need a very long seatpost to ride properly sat down. I commute most days on 26" BMXs.   :daumenhoch:

Thanks for all the help and advice and pics. The choice at the moment stands between these

I know the black and gold one is serious cash, but was thinking of selling most of the parts on it and changing them for rider parts a bit cheaper :crazy2: how about the new haro 24 twin top tube ? That said they are £750 so not that much cheaper :)
