If the seal comes off away from the chainring then just get a huge set of mole grips on it

Mole grips will chew the edge of the bb cone, and I want to reuse it...

not if you're careful and who's going to see it once you've refitted it?

All is now clear  ;D I just widened an old Raleigh bike spanner with a file and it seemed to work fine on mine.  Fingers crossed someone has not over tightened it though.......

put that cone in a vice, turn the crank, it'll all come off
