i think it was probably built by somebody who has grown out of BMX's & just fancied building something in a similar colour scheme as kind of a homage $:-\$

its not a replica its just something built using a "supposedly" popular colour scheme probably chosen to rekindle some fond memorys of a bygone era

he obviously never reckoned on the Purists

That looks like a singlespeed, but most hardtail mountainbike frames look too fragile in my opinion.
The reality is that they're usually strong enough, but they still don't look the part.

I've seen some that are almost right, but then they insist on tiny roadbike-style rear dropouts.
I wish someone would scale up a BMX frame to mountainbike size (bigger than 26" cruisers which are too small/low for long distance rides).

I think you mean 24" cruisers - MTB are 26"

Surely if you scale up a BMX then that Independent is what you'll get, espescially if you want to give it that retro feel without the low top-tube for plenty of standover?

I don't know much about frame building but it seems to me that when you see MTB frame's made from 853 (or any other high quality steel), then the tube diameter is nearly always small. Is this because it gives the best weight/strength compromise?

At the end of the day it all depends what you want to use it for. In my opinion 26" singlespeeds would be good for commuting to work (so long as there's no big climbs), thrashing down tow paths or going for a sunday ride with the family. If I want to go singletracking I'll take my MTB, if I'm training on the road, I'll use my road bike and if I'm going to the trails I'll take my 20" or 24".

Yes, I should stick to mountainbikes for mountainbiking, it's just that I have never really seen a hardtail mountainbike on the market that I really like.
I'd like a more BMX-inspired one. They still look too much like roadbikes for me.

The 26" cruisers have too short a seattube to make them comfortable for me riding any distance, but as you say that's not what they were designed for.
MTB wheels are 26" too, but the frames can be much bigger than any 26" cruiser frame.

Thanks for the links, the On-One is a nice size with the 29" wheels, but again the seattube is too short which means raising the post way up - this doesn't look good in my opinion.
I know looks don't matter when you're riding, but a big part of a purchase is the looks.

Edit>> That Volume Sledgehammer is getting there, similar to a Firemans Cruiser. I just need it a little bigger, just turn it up one more notch..

The Cannondale I have is pretty close to what I want, huge frame, but too fragile to attempt any jumping. Suspension bikes don't really interest me, and are probably too expensive.
