also if you polish alloy do you have to coat it with clear lacquer to protect the finish

yeah the stem was me too..   polished ali will dullen a bit but i think it should be fine as long as you give it a bit of a buff from time to time.  the main problem is that its prone to scratches and marks cos the annodizing isn't there..  annodizing makes it rock hard and much more durable on the surface..
  follow rombloke daves thread on removing annodizing and you cant go wrong..   good luck :daumenhoch:
