Yeah, twistlace wheels were well popular at one time.  From what I saw, definately stronger.  But the reason they were stronger (I reckon)  was because they were better tensioned as each spoke pulled against its neighbour, and so they remained tauter for longer...

However,  snap one spoke and it has the effect of snapping two as t'other spoke in the twisted pair lost all its tension.

Going back a few years, it used to be an old MX trick to lockwire or ziptie your spokes where they crossed, as this was thought to do the same thing; hold the spoke tension better/longer.   ;)
