They are cool. There was all kinds of nice stuff like that when A-head first came out. 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 conversions and quilled shafts for both sizes too. It was more for road and MTB bikes. Maybe when someone needs a new stem and cant get a shafted one in the style they want.

Its a shame that threaded forks tend to be harder to find than shafted stems!
