Freewheel help?

(1/3) > >>

ORB:
OK,

I have spent the day by fixing up a load of shagged tuffs. I have a few with freewheels that i just cannot free.

I have tried the chisell and mallet method, the soak and then batter method, i dont have access to a decent vice at the moment nor a free wheel key.

Any other tricks i am missing?

I have even smashed the gears off one Shimano one and have tried to get the rest off with a big pipe wrench and its not having any.

Cheers

theRuler:
if its a real sticker and you have no vice, you will need the freewheel tool
put a tyre on the wheel (with a tube!) for extra grip. then swing from yonder wrench.
also if its real tight, a vice would probably chew it up

or hold the wheel while someone hammers the freewheel with a "suitable drift"

when i nod my head, hit it

ORB:
lol...

Tried all that (apart from the vice and FW key bit) some of these are propper old.

I have never used a FW tool yet and i dont intend to start now.

:(

theRuler:
get one off ebay
i succumbed the other week and bought one (after 23 years of bike maintenance)

i feel a bit stupid having wasted all that time clamping wheels in a vice and beating the freewheels with a hammer and chisel.  :-[

the freewheel key really does make light work of it.

shouldnt whack you more than a deep sea off the bay

ORB:
but i want to do them NOW!!!
