Protecting polished Ally

So I got my nice shiny polished ally bits and bobs, but the chaps at work have said I need to coat it or lacquer it, otherwise it won't stay shiny for long. So what do I do with, for example, a seat post that is bare polished aluminium? So far it has been wet'n'dry then t-cut. Do I need to lacquer it or is there a polish/wax type coating that will protect it if it gets muddy/wet etc.
