Basic stuff, question 1 - coaster brake

(1/2) > >>

nhoj:
What does a coaster brake actually do? BITD I thought it let you do a roll-back without peddling backwards, is that right, is that all it does? :-\

P.S.  Never really thought about it much in the last twenty odd years untill some new skyways arrived from ebay today with a coaster fitted :D

lazychubs:
its ya rear brake

nhoj:
In leymans terms - a pedal backwards brake? :-\

TwoBobRob:
Yeah, you do roll back without pedalling as long as you 'set' the coaster first.  To do this, you crank backwards a tiny bit. Dont do this and you'll pedal backwards as normal.

Crank backwards a little harder and you'll apply the brake. This is true whether you're going forwards or backwards.

A coaster hub isn't a ratchet like a freewheel is, the insides are completely different.   :)

Rombloke:
well explained i feel mr steele.

1 merit mark for you dear boy

Dave
