if they not clicking with the chain off it may be the links catchin the teeth due the float of the freewheel knocking the chain outa line during rotation, does that make sense?

Yeah it does... thanks for that info, I did think it could be related...

I'll have tinker and see if I can find a remedy ...

have these cranksets been re released ?

if so how much are they and what's the best price/place to get them ?

Yeah they have...  I bought them from a fellow radster... but I hear the best place to get them from is US ebay... they'll cost you about £ 70-80.
