Came up with a solution today to fitting the old headsets to show bikes as a substitute for a headset press, which I don’t have.

I got a piece of all-thread, a block of wood for the bottom, a washer for the top (which just fits into the cup) and a socket.

Tightened up the nuts (no need to overtighten) and tapped the cup, then tightened and tapped and so on. Kept on till it was home. Popped in a treat and never touched the paint.

I was so chuffed with myself

Told you guys I was anal!!

I have been using this method for years Jazz, it is better than hitting it with a hammer though.

Threaded bar from any engineers supplies shop.  Another alternative is a 6" bench vice which you can use as a press. Just make sure jaw faces are fitted with some protection so as not to damage yer cups....

Personally,  I use a hydraulic press. Job's a good 'un  :daumenhoch:

Padding is another of my hot tips for maximum protection.

All-thread is available from most building merchants like Bren says.
