Title: Curtis Cruiser - Update 24.2.14
Post by: Gashead on January 27, 2014, 05:03 PM
Ok Curtis Owners, as you know I went to see Brian Curtis yesterday where I first spoke to him about this project around 5 years ago, however where on. Brian has my cruiser and is measuring the geometry in readiness to make a jig. He is going to make a limited number of frames, identical to the original cruiser. The frames will be finished as 'raw' so to see the awesome brazing and workmanship. You can then do as you please, leave, lacquer paint or chrome it at your expense.

We are working to get the tubes pre polished as in the 80's, so if chromed, the finish would be flawless.

So to be transparent, the cost of the tubing is c£140, and will take two days for Brian to make. He is asking £400 for frame and forks (which I think is very very reasonable). I have no financial interest in this project, simply taking the administration away from him.

He is also offering YOU the chance to visit, so to watch YOUR frame being made, so to either stamp your initials on the BB, however there will be no 'bespoke' requests (sorry), for an extra £50.

If you are interested, please contact me direct and not Brian. Guys, any questions, please ask me, this is a one and only chance of owing a bit of history, so please let me know.

He is only planning on making 20, and I have orders for around a dozen already, so be quick.

I would imagine that once the jig is made, he will start building in the spring and throughout the summer, remember he is 74 years old, so please be patient.

cheers Nick and Brian.

Chris, we are looking at cruiser bars, but only discussed the frame and forks.

Cruiser bars will possibly six inch rise of these, as he didn't originally make any.

As for an apprentice, he has a 44 year old already lol

Cheap that £400  "wantit" considering the time materials etc , you try & find somebody to do this
For under that , even a mass manufacture of frames  wouldent ?
You can be guaranteed  to get a flawless frame  :daumenhoch: that's for sure

Hi Nick,
Cracking idea and I would be genuinely interested.
Couple of questions around. The bars pictured in the thread....availability.
Would it be possible to get decals as per the "show" bike and what's the possibility of a pad set ?
Those questions aside I'm still interested, but wondered if it would be possible as an options type package.
Also what sort of time frame are we talking about....I'm in no rush, but just interested?
Please class this as my dib dobs Dobs :LolLolLolLol:
Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed the story of your visit too.
Cheers

As said, we haven't discussed bars, but sure we can sort a package.

I would imagine that they will be made over the summer.

I'm talking to Steve Firebird re pad sets

They are 24 inch not 26 or 29, as per the original frame.

Built to take Old School Parts, not N/S

This is not a remake, new version, simply a continued run of what was built in the 80's

Some will like it, some won't !

Title: Re: Curtis Cruiser
Post by: Gashead on January 27, 2014, 09:34 PM
Just to clarify.....the frame and forks are £400, post on top.

The £450 gets you a visit to the Curtis outlet, to meet Brian, see YOUR actual frame being made, and any name or number stamped on the BB.

The ONLY difference to the frame being made to that made in the 80's is - un drilled forks, and BC being stamped on the fork drop outs. So to differentiate from the cherished 80's made frame.

Early doors chaps, so I don't have exact info, it's a rolling project.

I am only taking names, so to give Brian an idea of interest! however of the 20 he wants to make, they are gradually being booked  :4_17_5:

I have just got off the phone from Brian and the jig has been made ! All hand built from geometry based on my Curtis cruiser.

I am due to go down and see him a week on Sunday, so to see the 'prototype' being made from non t45 material, once he is happy this frame is scrapped (not on his nelly) and work will commence on the frames.......

I will take pics and keep you all posted.

If you build it, they will come !

Not a big fan of cruisers generally, but this one looks really cool. The shape looks more like a 20 inch to me, and for that reason i love it. This makes the new Haro cruiser look like a joke bike.
Title: Re: Curtis Cruiser - Update 10.2.14
Post by: martin46 on February 11, 2014, 10:14 PM
Here is a genuine opportunity to own a proper old school frame and forks, with old school geometry, spec and best of all built by the same man that built them back in the 80's. Pretty unique I reckon and not like all the other repop stuff that's out there, by Skyway and Haro etc.
A real Curtis, manufactured by Curtis.
In some ways its probably better than some of the later, old Curtis frames that are out there, as they were made under license by Rickman, still good quality. But not a patch on the quality of Brian's work.
I am a little biased as I live local to Brian and have always ridden and loved his frames, but if you haven't put your name on the list. You're missing out on something very special.

Job's a goodun Nick  :daumenhoch:

I don't know the details of what's happened Nick, but I for one appreciate all your efforts to date to get this off the ground. I fully appreciate that it's not your full time job ( the same goes for guys like Del & Steve) and people have to appreciate that folks on here have families and other interests, as well as the pressures that come with life in General.
I really hope that you don't knock it all on the head for one individual who doesn't appreciate what you've tried to do for them.
It's so true that the minority always spoil it for the majority, but keep your chin up mate, it's far easier to focus on the negatives.....it's just human nature.
If there is anything I can do to help out (even given my limited knowledge and contacts) you only have to ask.
Please try to remember guys this is a hobby for a lot of people involved, very few make a living from it, so be patient and appreciative of your fellow radsters.

Without community spirit on here.....it all falls apart.

Sorry guys....rant over

Just a foot note, as I'm with Brian at the mo !

Tonight I will take orders for the first 5 frames which will be from frame number BC 2014 - BC03 to BC 2014 - BC08

Brian expects to start the first frame being BC2014 - BC03 in early May, and the expectation is that he could build 2 frames in the month, however he has got other commitments, so may take slightly longer, as does not want to be pushed.

Should any of the first five and subsequent further orders which to see the frame being made, this will need to be done on a Saturday.

Brian now needs to buy the original T45 material, and will shell out £1000, so the first five orders will need to pay a deposit of a minimum of £100 - which I will take on his behalf.

Once a deposit has been paid, Brian has suggest that he will talk via the phone from 6 o'clock onwards should there be any special requests and for updates. His number will be passed over by me, via PM, once deposit has been taken.

Brian has confirmed that seat posts are available at £20 and bars at £55 - the bars are a standard 6" rise and are 26" wide.

Pics of today's visit to follow.

Cheers

Nick & Brian

Page 1  ???  :-\  ;D

Unfortunately i'm having to pull out from this project & have offered dib dobs on my place in the queue to Danny Robo in return for him paying back my deposit .

As he's Curtis mad it seemed the logical thing to do & the money HAS now been paid.

There seem no shortage of takers on this one so I'm sure no one will be losing out.  :daumenhoch: :Great_Britain:

Just called him.....he has the material, delivered last week. He has made five sets of forks, due to the fact he hates making them after the frame. He is starting on the frames this week, however having a weeks holiday towards the end of May. So looks like the first lot will commence early June (near enough as I said folks). I'm due to see him first week of June, so will update agin then.

Must admit Gizmo's statement confused me. That's clear now then. Early June production start it is. Only 2 weeks away. I wasnt aware of other committments made outside of Rad and Curtis Owners page.
Cheers :daumenhoch:

I've just been talking with Brian, and have an update for those waiting for handle bars and seat posts for their new Curtis cruisers. There will be some available sometime next month for those that already have their frame sets. Brian is very busy at the moment and needs to complete another project by the end of this month. Once its done, he will turn his attention back to the Cruiser frames project  :)

late 84, through 85. After Brian had severed ties with Curtis ltd. He only built a maximum of 20 of them back then. If you want specific dates for production, Brian might remember, or if not, Colin Chivers should know as helped develop it. Pretty sure he's on here, but def on Face-ache Curtis group  :daumenhoch:

Calling all owners of the new Brian Curtis 24" cruiser, frame sets (assuming you're all on here)
We would like to create a register with your help, if you dont mind.
Would you comment on this thread, or PM me with your name and the serial number of your frame set please?
If you have not received yours yet, please just add yourselves as and when you do.

Many thanks,

Martin  :daumenhoch:
