Title: Neil Ruffell Streetbeat spec anyone?
Post by: Stella Dave on August 08, 2007, 11:58 PM
Can anyone help with wot parts made up this bike please?
Need to know all parts please.
Have mailed dordy as he built one but no reply as yet.

What type of tuff pads as I have been offered some but want correct ones!

Was rear Tuff alloy hubbed? I know the front wasn't.
Were the forks standard with streetbeat?

Cheers guys.

plastic hubs front & back, I remember seeing him at meadowbank in edinburgh on this bike in 1985

redline 401s, ez bars, mushrooms, shimano dx - gold? I have pics of this bike somewhere

the f&f were bought as a set then, the forks had wee arrow shaped cutouts on the dropouts and broke easily!!

hahaha, i've just been reading the test report.

"one thing's for sure, you'll never break a Street Beat frame, no matter how good at thrashing you are: this one is solid."

i wonder if they like to take a look at some of my old street beats...  :LolLolLolLol:

rear coaster?!?

yeah, Neil rode a coaster brake on flatland and ramps when he was on skyway. when he moved on to Holeshot, that was when he switched to freewheel.

I wonder whether Dordys / Madall's one had a coaster?

Okay call me thick here but coaster brakes...those are ones you pedal back to brake right?
Whys he got MX's on rear also?
Not up to speed on coasters.

Chances of getting sharp x1 grips?

yeah, a coaster brake is a back pedal brake.  you can pick one up of ebay for around £20.

Weren't they 400 flites?

I don't know enough about flight cranks to be able to tell ya, but the test just said Redline Flite.

If I get a chance, I'll try and scan the pictures in, and some of you experts can confirm....
Title: Re: Neil Ruffell Streetbeat spec anyone?
Post by: Stella Dave on August 09, 2007, 12:56 AM
Just flites apparently, different thing going by the guide on Ebay.

"Many people do not know the differences in the various versions of REDLINE Flight cranks.I will try to provide a basic tutorial covering this topic.I will be adding more detailed pics very soon to help in identifying the many versions listed below.
First off let's start with the original REDLINE Flight cranks. These can be identified by having a six splined spindle and no pinch bolts. These were made available to the public in 1980 and are known as "FLIGHT CRANKS" they are somewhat scarce(compared to other Flight crank versions) and used a threaded (28T) spindle.REDLINE did list the part number for these as 401 but did not advertise them as such in any known advertisements or catalogs.
Around 1981 REDLINE 401 and in 1982 the 400 Flight cranks were introduced.
The 400 Series (sometimes mistaken for the original FLIGHT cranks) were a budget version of the Flight crank introduced in 1982 and had a fixed spider,no pinch bolts and accepted a square tapered spindle (larger than a standard size spindle also fit DB TURBO and SUGINO 400 cranks). They also came with a threaded sealed bottom bracket set.The cranks were made for REDLINE by SUGINO.
The 401 Series accepted a six splined spindle had full wrap around pedal bosses and wrap around pinch bolt bosses.Introduced in 1981 these are very similar to the original FLIGHT cranks accept that they do have pinch bolts.
In the very late 1980's or early 1990's REDLINE changed the design and these cranks were known as simply FLIGHT cranks again (not 401's).These cranks look similar to the 401 Series (also accept a six spline spindle) but the pinch bolt bosses were welded on and the pedal bosses were not the full wrap around version. They also came with a non-threaded spindle and sealed bearings. These cranks are commonly mistaken for the older more valuable 401 Series but are not considered to be true old school items. They are considered Mid school by most knowledgeable collectors.
Later in the evolution REDLINE came out with the double pinch Flight cranks. These are easily distinguished from the earlier old school versions by the double pinch bolts on each arm. These are not considered old school.
Some people also mistake REDLINE PROLINE cranks for Flights but they are easily distinguished by the fact that the arms are wider and don’t have a channel for the REDLINE decal on the backs of the arms. They also have an 8 spline spindle. All the old school Flight cranks mentioned above did have this channel."

Post by: Lazarou on August 09, 2007, 01:20 AM
I see 401's in the Southsea pics and 400's in the Kelloggs pics he must have used both but when i picture a Neil Ruffell replica i see 400's.
Title: Re: Neil Ruffell Streetbeat spec anyone?
Post by: Trev on August 09, 2007, 01:24 AM
also he started with white EZ bars then it looks as if he switched to chrome...

so depending on which cranks you get would then depend on which bars you got to make it correct i suppose...

be careful as you may have to buy green grips on a certain model....

Quote
I wonder whether Dordys / Madall's one had a coaster?

yeah i had the coaster tuffs on mine.

the grips were mushrooms on his bike not the sharp ones. but the sharps are a better orange to match.there was a nos pair in the for sale section.

he has 2 different bikes.
the one with the chrome bars at southsea was because he bailed on a big big air and bent his so if i remember right swapped a set of campbell prolite.
silver dx's.
panrancer freestyle tyres.
mx 1000 with centre devices changed front to potts mod.
kashi aero either orange or white
skyway freestyle stem think firebirds got my old one for sale
ermm think thats it.

i could'nt afford the flite at the time but if i was gonna get a set it would have been the ones with the black chain wheel.
breaks the colours up nice.

This is the guy thats making a fortune out of the double pinch flights, they are not the era correct ones for old school builds and only cost about £80 straight from the states anyway  :police:

Post by: billstup on August 09, 2007, 11:51 AM
I`d have to say as well that imo they`d stopped making the 400`s by the time that Neil rode for Skyway, I can remember getting my first set of flights from Surrey Skates Dec of 82 and they were 401`s, then got a another set when Prter Hawkins took over the Skyway trick team in late 83, but these were 401`s too, Neil never joined Skyway untill late 84 so surely he`d have got 401`s too  ???

Probably would work out at £113 to uk, then theres a chance of import duties.
But i got some other stuff at the same time, to save on postage.

I worked it out, a raw frame £65 + £40 powdered + postage to and from powder coater £20.
Probably a bit more if not the same?
I went for Ginnys to have the proper orange (as far as i know - correct me if im wrong - from Ginnys).

Just the way I went. Not trying to diss your build or anything mate.
If it turns out well then my Brother is after one also, so may go your route and get a raw frame to start with.

what i done with the one madalls got now was sent a brake pad with the bike and missfits craig matched it perfect to it.
the colour matched spot on with the tuffs too.

if i remember right it was an american ford colour.
i sent some touch up paint for it to madall a bit back that had the paint code and name of it on the box.
might help you  :daumenhoch:.

God, these things are confusing. I thought the first flights weren't attached to spider and that was later cheaper ones?

I've decided to do an orange streetbeat as my 1st bike and am going to order a raw f+f from the usa, just wondering what colour orange I need to get it powdered to get the authentic look? Think I'm going to do a look a like becuase some of the parts look a bit steep price wise. Is there anything I should ask the seller in US to put on the package to try and avoid any problems with customs or will they know the score and sort this for me?

If you order from Ginnys she puts down details which should get it past customs.
Ive just had one of her Orange StreetBeats sent over. But she does do raw frames also.

If you look on cheap streetbeat thread, think £65 delivered from vert-ego or £52 from US Ginnys.

If i order some Tuffs and a few other bits from Jinnys will they be delivered by Royal Mail or by USPS themselves becuase I've seen there vans driving about over here?

I was also looking at some of the new Redline cranks on ebay and was wondering whats the difference between the Us,Europe and Spanish versions? Would I need a US version with the Skyway being an american bike?

parcelforce worldwide will probably deliver to you,

streetbeats need a US bb, the cranks on ebay dont come with US bb ask them if they are a 19 or 20mm spindle as 19 is profile size and 20 is D20 from alansbmx

haha, my build is back on track. Kinda lost the inspiration for while.

Tryed to keep it as close as poss till i can afford Kashi, flights and find sharp grips.
Have found a spider to mock the fixed flight one. Pics up very soon!

Still unsure of bars decals, correct tyres, tape on frame, seat post (not Ody)

Funny readin through this again, I've learnt a lot!  :D

Finishing my ruff rep for the end of month to take to Burner Bash, It's taken a long time sourcing
correct parts but I'm very happy with the bike and how close it is to the original.
Still not got 400 Flights and maybe never will with the price they are but I've got a good match.

Just polishing up the brakes and restoring the DX pedals and it's pretty much done.
Pics will be up soon! 8)

Great, i'd like to see that  :daumenhoch: Mine is finished (just about). People still debate about what the correct parts are though. I know he changed bars, grips and crank. Get some pics up when you're done.

From the pics both 401's and 400's were used, the 400's were made by Sugino and sold as a cheaper option to 401's in the early to mid eighties.
