Title: 1981 Motobecane MX10
Post by: Chilli Rinse on April 19, 2021, 08:45 PM
I found another cheap French bike on eBay France to play about with. At ?70 for the frame set including the headset, bars, bar pad, stem, levers, grips, seat, post, clamp, nos chrome Rigida wheel set with patina, new tyres and tubes, how could I say no. The shipping and vat added to the cost but still a good deal I reckon. Apparently the MX10 was the first Motobecane BMX available to buy, not quite convinced about that though ! She arrived today so I set about unpacking her and loosely piecing her back together.

I had some Rigida Superchromix 20x2.125 wheels that had already been cleaned and greased sitting about. So I bought some cheap all black snake belly tyres to use instead of the all yellow Kenda Krackpot tyres that were included in the bundle. I have a Motobecane branded Takagi crankset and a pair of Weinmann 1020 calipers in slightly faded black to be used. YST bb on the way, I just hope the 130mm spindle works out ok. The grips are spec I think but they will be uncomfortable so might go with some yellow Oury waffles or OGK Mach grips I have. I'm sure I've got some generic black cables to use too. Black chain on the way too.

I nearly forgot about the black HTI rat traps, they will be used too.

This should be a quick one  :LolLolLolLol:

That's cool. Many years ago a buddy of mine had a suspension bike from the 70s made by them. It was luminous yellow, IIRC. It was so heavy you couldn't ride it, and so bouncy that all you could really do was get it out and bounce up and down on it like a pogo stick that never leaves the ground.

Was great fun, mind.

^^^ ^^^ ^^^

Sounds like good exercise  :LolLolLolLol:

Update... hit a problem already. The Takagi crankset, although it has jis tapers, the pedal threading is actually French. I guess it was produced exclusively for the French market being Motobecane branded. Problem is the HTI pedals are standard 9/16, so the crank arms are getting tapped out to 9/16 soon. PITA already, not such a quick build after all

Last night I spoke to dad about my crank and pedal problem. He knocks up these 9/16 taps for me to use. Trashed a pair of spare pedals he had knocking about, cut two slots in each spindle. They worked a treat, perfect threads for the HTI pedals.

What a star ⭐️

Thank you dad  fistblump

Is the M logo in the gussett a decal or is it cut out of the metal?

I managed to wrestle the grips off ready for my purchase of dotty black and yellow replacements. They should be more comfy.

I found a cheap nos 42t 122 bcd chainring as the one that came with the crankset was buggered. Not ideal a 42t but a 44t would have set me back 60 notes + international shipping and vat, no thanks I'm on a budget.

Faded black Weinmann 1020's were dug out and mounted. I can only find one black cable though, I'll keep looking.

I found a reasonably priced pair of Motobecane crank caps, so I had to have them. The French seller needs to pull his finger out and get them shipped as I'm ready for them. Bottom bracket, Crankset, pedals and chain fitted now. The grips are on too. I dug out some Dia-Compe style brake pads and fitted those onto the 1020's. I just need to find the elusive black cable and I'm done.

IDK what it is with the French but they are awful tardy once they have your cash.

I needed a water block for a graphics card and there wasn't one. So I had one commissioned and made by a guy in France. He took about 6 weeks to ship it, then forgot parts. Was a total nightmare and he was an arrogant twat.

I hope you don't get pissed around, because those are awful shiny. Will look ace too.

Nearly there...

The Motobecane crank caps arrived and look great on. I found the black cable I've been looking for, it's on my MX113  :LolLolLolLol:  so I think I'll be popping into Halfords tomorrow to buy a cheap set of cables to get me over the finish line.

All done now  :daumenhoch: I'm just waiting for a break in the weather to take a few pics. I popped to Halfords this morning to buy 2 Clarks universal brake cables at 3.99 each. They were rung up at the counter and they wanted 7.50 each. Err, excuse me, they are only 3.99 each on your website. So after a quick check, sorry, you're right they are only 3.99 each. Cool, I'll take them. So beware if you pop in for a cheap fix for your ride, double check the online and in store pricing. You may be getting knocked
 :LolLolLolLol:

If you have time and some old frame pads knocking around, please check the wanted/needed board as I'm looking for a pad to totally complete this build.

Watch this space for pics coming soon.

I decided not to use the cheap dotty grips and use the og ones. Happy I did now. The yellow dye was bleeding out of the dotty grips something rotten.
