Title: Mancunian pickers
Post by: oldschoolace on December 16, 2016, 03:56 PM
I recently came up with a way of tracking down old bmx stock and with our kid home from Japan for Christmas we spent a few days zipping around the north west checking out my theory.

The buzz and excitment of potentially unearthing dusty old parts that have not seen the light of day for 30 year was quite intoxicating. We didnt do much climbing around but there was a fair bit of rummaging through boxes and looking in outhouses. I can really appreciate why the two lads on American pickers really enjoy what they do.

3 days in and what's the outcome so far?

Well i wont be retiring any time soon but i did pick up a few nice bits, all nos. Hubs, grips, brake pads, seatclamps etc and i have quite a few leads still to follow up. One guy had a fookload of kids yes racing pants and tops and supposidly had a few curtis framesets and mk 1 raleigh chopper frames until a few years ago.

Ended up leaving a fair bit of stuff behind that was either too dear or i had no real need for. Nos fisbone turnpegs, odyssey new wave brake pads, cougar seat/post combos, the yes stuff, alsorts!

Met some really interesting people and heard more than few stories of gear going in skips or to the tip  :'(
One guy said he had been giving nos stuff away for years to anyone who asked him for it until he decided he needed shut and binned the rest

Ive got a few more days planned over the christmas period and will post owt interesting i turn up  :daumenhoch:

This lot was from one location  ;)

Top work Clint... I was talking to Andy about deadstock 80s casual garms .. The south of Italy is slowed paced and still full of non chain non corporate family shops .. I'm sure there's still plenty of boxed bagged and tagged stuff still out there!
Very jealous .. I'd love to have a traul for BMX stuff too but I think you've got most of the NW covered mate !!
Can't wait to see further updates  :4_17_5:

Yeah, great work mate! Would love to do the same over here, though I think I read somewhere that some entrepreneurial locals trawled through the old bike shops a few years back, though I also remember you and your brother netting a small haul when you were last over. :daumenhoch:

Had a few days spare this week so me and our kid went on a few more bmx related jaunts.
Pickings were half decent and all picked up for buttons :daumenhoch:

we also found, but didnt buy, some oddy pitbull 2s, fish-bone rotor, redline big block cranks and a nos in the box meteorlite skyway style top tube bolt on freestyle stander. Looking at the design its seemed to be similar if not the same as some of the other un-named platforms that have popped up once or twice  :)

Oh and we picked this 98 Dyno compe up for buttons!! all stock and virtually nos  :daumenhoch:

A longer than expected jaunt up the m6 saw us in an old motoring shop with a healthy smattering of old school bits. Nothing super exotic but the thrill of unearthing bits was just as strong.
Could have gone daft in there but just picked up a few bits that I will likely use on builds  :daumenhoch:

To be frank the trip up the M6 was a ballache after a massive fire the day before. Our kid came up with another bit of computer wizardry and we were playing Celica selfies with the road traffic camera networks

Thats us, bottom right with our arms out of the window and sunroof :LolLolLolLol:

Thursday saw the plucky pair heading to pastures new yet familiar, checking out childhood holiday parts of the world.
Pickings looked thin on the ground until the last shop turned out to be ALOT better than expected. A root around in rafters and behind doors turned up this little lot  :daumenhoch:

All totally nos apart from the front simplex which has seen little use but been kept in unfavourable conditions. The Araya aero with suntour hub really made my day.
The lot was an absolute steal  :D

A phone call a few days after coming down from MK cheered me up no end and saw the plucky pair off to the home of the Jam Buttie to collect the remainder of the old stock that had been unearthed during the shop move  :daumenhoch:

Well.... it seemed daft not to swing by a few old bike shops on the way and although pickings were slim we did pick up some zeronine stylee race plates and numbers  :)

Anyone recognise the plates? seen those numbers before but cant quite pin em down

Yesterday saw the last jaunt for a while, Dans back to Japan tomorrow so a hastily final bmx fling was arranged  :)

A coastal town was picked (in case we turned up nothing and could do a spot of arcade action  ;) ) and the celica was once again throttled down the countries A roads in search of new hunting grounds.
The first stop turned up a few bits but the third was the jackpot!!!
We arrived just as the shop owner was loading a large trailer full of old frames
With moments to spare before the scrap man made off we scoured the trailer and managed to rescue a few frames and a set of nos grifter forks. There was probably more in there, certainly a tomahawk/strika frame but the scrap man didnt seem happy at his dwindling takings for the day so we had to make do with what ever was retrievable without unloading the whole stack.
It was mostly road stuff but there was bound to be the odd other bmx related bits in there,.... we shal never know.

The Fishbone vert pegs are sadly missing their mounting nuts but had a thoroughly enjoyable 3 Hours sifting through every nook and cranny of the shop, back room and workshop with the managers blessing  :)

It wasn't to go and have a look, just wondering where you'd been. I work in Shoreditch and there's a few round here but they're mainly overpriced fixies and stuff like that.

Ah I got you. Yeah, I pretty much wrote off the busy central bit and just looked round the outskirts that were doable via tube and/or a few stops on national rail,
Two were over Hampton court / Twickenham sort of way and another was in east Putney

past the asda on left - wickes on right  past the church on left, after that junction bike shop on left
bleached out Mike Buff poster on wall in window
shop maybe cloased down

I went to a cool place called burts cycles. Apparently most of the bicycles you see in film and tv are from him!
He mentioned that place in Kingston and said he thought it may have shut. Had a quick luck but couldn't find anything that looked like it may be the place.

waldens the shop is called and i had a lot of stuff out of there back in early 2000`s (really should have taken a picture of shop bitd )and so did vertego as he was doing all the shops back then as i must have missed a hutch haul of parts by a week that he had for no money at all as bike shop just wanted rid of .
used to love doing the searching for stuff as stories so on and did come across a few bike shops that had stuff but didnt want to sell it as were waiting for the boom . problem was i notice ebay started to get bigger soon after and that was that for stuff finding .

Took mrs ace out for a juant to Betws-y-coed on thursday and swung by a bike shop i had already picked just cos it was near  ;)
Old fella had cleared a few boxes out since my last visit and i unearthed these in amongst the derailleurs and fibrax road pads. Not a massive find but still a buzz rummaging through oily boxes  :D

Goes to show, even shops that you may think have been rinsed could have stuff tucked away  :daumenhoch:

Season 3 of the mancunian pickers sees the intrepid duo taking things to another level!!!
With a whole new stratagy in hand and a fairly extensive research programme finished a whole new world of finds, stories, archives and social documentation awaits  :daumenhoch:

Day one saw the lads in pastures new and after a less than encouraging start the day began to develop nicely.

Some fairly rare nos in the box Gen 1 Oddy Phat black widow cranks were unearthed along with some xposure pegs and a whole bunch of Skyway axle replacement bits including 18 bearing caps/shields.

Title: Re: Mancunian pickers
Post by: oldschoolace on August 18, 2018, 12:03 PM
The cranks were left (for now) as they were a pretty penny but other shops turned up more stuff!
A couple of nos primo Hemerrhiod seats along with a scattering of mid chainwheels and a bunch of gen 1 Dia compe FS990s still on the card hangers
It was starting to look like mid stuff would be the more prevelent bits to be found until i spotted a flash of red on a pegboard and unearthed this beauty lurking behind a load of modern shite  :daumenhoch:

A rather miserable, soaking wet and near cancelled local juant turned up a few bits this morning. The chain is Izumi.
Sadly it looks like the headsets had the odd part pillaged by the bike shop they came from but they cost buttons and well worth it for parts  :daumenhoch:

I'd still go for a set of Hammer elbow pads & gloves though! ...assuming they're not kids sizes and would fit an adult?

Thanks!!! Much appreciated! Any idea of cost?

I got a pm off Clint yesterday asking if I was still at the same address. I replied with “yes, are you in the area?”. Clint said no but keep an eye out for the Postman over the next couple of days. Then today, a little box turned up.

Was a sort of second hand shop Mick. Probably turn up on ebay as a job lot at some point. They had alsorts, gardening gear, tools, electricals. Wasn't a great deal of bmx there but they had some new school bikes, couple of GT's, a Mongoose or two and a subrosa.
Know nothing about the redline or the cranks on it so just moved on  :)

Okay so a poor days picking for me on Saturday but I saw these on a wall in a bike shop.. I wanted them but the owner didn’t bite sadly ...

We did get to go to the seaside though for some old school arcade action and fish and chips!

Can I ask? Do any of your finds get to the sales market? or are they kept for your personal stashes? I remember enquiring about a black headset a while back but nothing came of it lol?  ??? so while I enjoy what your finds dig up I'm curious?  :daumenhoch:

Following a late cancellation on a job we found ourselves with an unexpected day to spare. Hurried arrangements were made to swing by a few shops we had visited previously that we felt may have more to offer and we weren't wrong!!
An interesting dilemma now confronts us, just how many of the shops we have visited might have more stuff tucked away?  :chin:
