Afternoon chaps
I wasn't going to build any more bikes, but in a moment of foolishness I decided to buy Ed's Pashley frame off him
Now I know next to bugger all about Mid School, but thought it would be nice to have a go at a bike from the era that kept BMX alive and after doing the Curtis a couple of years back means I get to have another quality British bike :Great_Britain: It also means that I have an additional excuse to go up & see Ed and muck about on some ramps for the first time in ages :2gunsfiring_v1:
I'm starting to have a dig about online, but also hoping that some of you kind souls can give me a bit of advice on suitable parts?
As far as I know the frame is from 2001
This morning I had an email from Lee Prescott the frame designer, who said that the frame is in fact a 'DarkCyde' (Dylan Clayton signature model) apparently not many were made so it's a bit of a rare beastie
This is going to be a very slow build, but I thought I might as well get a thread started and update as I go along
-
I'd keep it simple if it's your first late mid build & get your hands on as much Primo stuff as possible :daumenhoch:
-
Looking forward to seeing this progress John. :daumenhoch:
-
Prescott never told me it was rare :'( :buck2: :crybaby:
-
Griff's gonna be rubbing his ginger nuts up and down this baby ....
( just hoover up the crumbs after Griff ... ok? )
-
Looking forward to seeing this progress John. :daumenhoch:
Thanks Nick
Intending to go with black (or maybe chrome) fork, don't really do colours so silver or chrome parts and black grips, tyres and saddle
In a nutshell, it's probably going to look a bit like this ^ but not as good ;D
-
Got a Primo Casket stem if it's any good to you big J.

Just googled the above, they look nice and solid fistblump
Was going to call you anyway as we're overdue a catchup!

get it Griff :)

Sorry bud... taken me until now to realise i'd left my phone in the car :idiot2: ..... also , think i've got a Primo lever and a Shadow Conspiracy seat clamp (if right era and size) :daumenhoch: .... and (i think i've got it right) ... an FBM chainwheel.
-
This is going well :)
& here I was trying to take my time - not even got the frame yet :LolLolLolLol:
Just realised though that I'm not aware of any midschool equivalent of Sharp grips ::)
-
Congratulations mate! :4_17_5: I'll keep watching this thread :daumenhoch:
-
Hmm just looked at the magazine scans thread (thanks Chubby) and saw that OT cycles were still selling Sharps in 2000 fistblump (also mentions 'power paws' but no idea what they are?)
Might give something else a go, but seeing as all 3 of my old school bikes have them it's going to be a struggle ;D
-
Realised that was just a lazy ad listing and power paws were made by Odyssey (normal mid school sex toy-looking things)
-

"longnecks" or "gedda grips" are far more fitting than "power paws", also primo team grips are all era correct to a 97-01 frame ;) power paws were more early to mid 90s, very short and chunky kind of like the old
GT/AME :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley:

Don't worry I ruled them out straight away, was just intrigued by the OT Cycles ad saying Sharp 1:11/power paws in the same line
My new school bike has Odyssey team grips just because they look close to Sharps
Couldn't find any images of Primo team grips, but will keep trying ;)
-
primo team grips were very much like mk1 odyssey "gedda grips", only with primo incorporated into the ribbed MUSHROOM design :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
-
Primo also did grips that looked like the tread on the Primo Wall tyres, tough but a bit hard on the ol' hands!

You are getting a free pair of ODI Longnecks with the frame Ginge fistblump

It's like Christmas every day
-
Well . i'll go to the bottom of our stairs ..
Nice one griff .. Enjoy the build . fistblump
-
Ok then, tonight's challenge is to recommend a suitable crank, what are my options without going too exotic?
I heard that OPCs are frowned upon unless it's a flatland bike?
Got one possible suggestion from Dave but would like to keep it vaguely era-correct if funds allow
-
Has to be a primo for me , run em on nearly all my bikes

They look nice and chunky but wasn't sure when they came out, thanks Mike :daumenhoch:
Will keep an eye out for a used set

Hello dear
Not sure on BB tbh as I don't have it yet, hoping to get up to see Ed & the Suspects at Trm1 on the 27th ;)
Got brakes sorted already & weighing up options on wheels - it's always good to have options though so feel free to bung over some pics/prices if you can be arsed :daumenhoch:
-
They pop up all the time mate , just bought another set today for £25 posted

That sounds very reasonable ;) eBay?
Feel free to give me a shout if you stumble across anything similar and don't need them yourself (chrome or silver ideally)
I have a horrible feeling a lot of this stuff is on Facebook
-
All my stuff comes from eBay or here , I'm not on Facebook
-
Little bit more progress today, couple more things sorted to pick up or wait for :D
Tonight's quest is to see what you think about bars, looking for 2000+ year-wise in chrome...
Also tanwall tyres, anything worth looking for aside from v monsters?
Gonna have a thank you list like an Oscar speech at this rate, can't thank you guys enough for the help & advice I've been getting
:radbmxsmilie: fistblump
-
I'll try and get some pics later.
-
I'll try and get some pics later.
Thanks Gaz but I'm sorted for rims & hubs now fistblump
Here's how it's looking currently
Pashley DarkCyde frame with FSA headset
DC brake, DK clamp, BB, ODI longnecks and Sun RhinoLyte 48H rims coming from Ed
Hutchman Dave's come up with a Primo Casket stem and maybe a Primo lever (needs to be a lefty)/clamp, FBM chainwheel
Munny Mark's dug out some silver Haro Megahubs
chrome Landing Gear fork on its way from JT Smooth
Everything else still to sort, on the look out for
used but decent Powerbites,
silver platform pedals,
chrome 2pc bars
Tanwall tyres (suitable for ramps)
Black seat - something plain ideally
Micro adjust post
Spokes
Freewheel/chain (won't know gearing etc yet until I know how many cogs I've got up front)
Not bad going considering I don't pick up the frame until the 27th :daumenhoch:
:radbmxsmilie:
-
No worries, 1st dib dobs on the FBM sprocket if it ever comes up.
Don't think I can help with anything you need.

Bloody vulture, not even seen a pic of it yet :LolLolLolLol:
If for any reason I didn't use it, it would go back to Dave though - seeing as he offered it to me FOC along with the other bits
-
Got the first bit of the build today - NOS Landing Gear fork in lovely chrome
Thanks JT for sending out so quickly :daumenhoch:
-
Got GT 'DX' platform pedals here Griff, will need an axel swap to 9/16" though
-
I'll have a rummage John but there's a brand new 14T Dicta freewheel left in my brother's stash if you need it. Might have pedals (let me know what size you need) and a few chains (black or silver let me know)
Might have a saddle as well so will look.
-
Thanks Jaymz/Spen :daumenhoch:
I'm hoping to find some sort of 3pc crank, keep searching but not finding much at the mo
Seeing as it's a decent spec frame though I don't really want to chuck a OPC on it anyway (plus the midschool :police: would probably string me up :teef: )
Once I know details of Dave's sprocket I'll have an idea of gearing ;)
-

Sorry Gaz

Nice. Very nice mate :coolsmiley:

-
a set of nice Primo cranks would look good but if you're keeping it to a tight budget then something generic like these should do the trick?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chrome-BMX-cranks-/282487026756?hash=item41c589f444:g:ws8AAOSwlY1ZIKVu
-
looks like I have crank sorted too, thanks to Dave
he dug out a profile crank that has a bit of 'patina' but otherwise perfectly functional - with a bit of a refinish they should be bob on :teef:
today's challenge is going to be sorting hubs (again)
I did have some lined up, but didn't know the size of the front sprocket until last night. Since I really love the sprocket this means I need a flip flop hub to run a smaller freewheel.
Found this on fleabay but not sure of the age of it, googling hasn't helped
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Primo-Pro-404-bmx-48h-flip-flop-sealed-bearing-NOS-rear-hub-New/252932861615
Also will need to find a front to match! Or face mismatched hubs (unless I can strip a black rear) and maybe having to buy 2 sets of spokes
another option
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sun-Ringle-flip-flop-rear-hub-14mm-BMX-mid-school-Street-Dirt-Park/132142487183?_trksid=p2385738.c100677.m4598&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908110712%26meid%3Dd6164b6f196a4e55b3fee121770bf0aa%26pid%3D100677%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D11%26sd%3D262996367218
there was a demolition one listed last night that looked decent as well but that's gone now ::)
-
Griff, I've got some black Prolite stealth ones you can have if you want them? they've never been used and from around the same era I believe?
will get you some pictures tonight mate :daumenhoch:

If you're after Primo super tenderizer pedals, they've just released them again & they look exactly like they used to!

Found this pic but no idea on year

Hutchman Dave has also very kindly offered me these minty GT ones which are the front runners right now :daumenhoch:
-
Hubs sorted thanks to Roberto :4_17_5:
Crank sorted thanks to Dave (again)
Not really wanting for that much now tbh, but I can see myself spending a while waiting for last bits
Chrome 2pc bars (Slams?)
Seat n post

Maybe a lefty lever

The original meat tenderizers came out in '96 & the super tenderizers were '97/'98 iirc. People ran them well into the 00's 👍 The ones in your picture are early versions of the supers.

Little update
Here's a pic of the hubs, Rob's also found some spokes and nipples :daumenhoch:
-
Freewheel posted yesterday mate - it will fit those fine but don't forget to put plenty of grease on the threads before you spin it on :daumenhoch:

Picked up the frame last night, along with a few other bits from Ed (silver NOS Rhynolite rims, DC brake, DK clamp, ODI longneck grips, fsa headset, and an Odysy ratchet lever which I may try and strip) Ed also managed to find a set of V monsters :4_17_5:
Thanks to Chris (trails97) for the top cap star nut thingy - can attach the forks now! :daumenhoch:
Now I just need to sort a saddle and those bloody bars :D
-
Bars sorted thanks to Mr Taipan, cheers Carl :daumenhoch:

Picked these up tonight (thanks Rob)
Plan is to build them up & finish the bike off at MK :daumenhoch:
-
After a massive group effort this was finished in time for the lake ride
Wheels built and trued up on Friday
Rear axle slotted down to 10mm on Saturday
Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this, came out great IMO and rides really nice

That came out real nice :daumenhoch:

Cheers Rob - they did :daumenhoch:
Ben (who trued them up) was particularly impressed with my handiwork lacing up the front - rather than follow conventions like a sheep I boldly decided to make one of the spokes go under or over when it 'should' have gone over or under ::)
Still it was nice to have a go and helped by Beefy Keith and son and Rich Clean all helping, Friday afternoon saw plenty of rimming, flanges and nipple action
-
Looked a cracking build once it was all buttoned up :daumenhoch:
Particularly liked the new "snake spoke" invention :D

looks dope ... the LLP style handlebar pad electrical tape made it

Thanks dear but will pass
After putting so much collective love into building these ones they are staying :daumenhoch:
Also to keep the lovely sprocket means the rear hub needs to be a flip flop innit
