So i decided to start a new project after the ripper went down so well, some of you may not like this but I'm a general bike head and decided I was going to do a mountain bike!
I wanted to do a full suspension bike as it would make a nice model and be as different as possible from the bmx model. So after a fair bit of research i still hadn't decided which bike, whatever it was going to be I'd need to get my hands on one. There isn't really any standout or iconic retro full suspension bikes that fitted the bill so I thought it'd be cool to do a relevant or famous bike linked with someone important.
Now, If you haven't heard of Steve Peat then google him but having met him about 15 years ago on a snowboard trip I knew he was a sound bloke so looked him up on facebook and explained who I was and what i was doing.
He was more than keen to get involved and told me he still had his 2009 santa cruz v10 that he won the world DH champs on. He continued to tell me it was in his loft still built up as it was the day he raced it and that i could come and take it away for reference for as long as i needed. BINGO!!!
I know it's not retro but It's a very relevant bike to the history of downhill mountain biking and it looks the absolute nuts.
So i went up and met him and came home with a bit of cycle history and a WHOLE lot of work ahead of me!!!
This is the bike, it's a v10 but has slightly custom geometry for him and a few custom parts not to mention the custom steve peat livery.
I thought I'd start with the spokes as thats one part that I didn't tackle last time and thought it could give me some problems.
I knocked up some rough hubs and rims just to see how the lacing went, bearing in mind that I've never laced a real wheel let alone a 1/3 scale one.
This black one was the first attempt and has 0.8mm brass rod for spokes which is a bit fat really as the real spokes are about 2.1 mm so 0.8 x 3 is 2.4mm and looks a bit bulky, plus the spokes on the real bike are blade type and are flat so measure 2.1mm wide but much less thickness.
So I tried again but this time i used 0.5mm brass and i squashed them in a machine vice to flatten them which made them almost perfect in measurement and look correct.

I laced it up on a jig so it spins pretty true, obviously theres no thread and nipple so I cant tune it properly but this is close enough for a model. The finished wheel will have little mock nipples but they wont be threaded.

Great project and lovely bike.
What's ur timescale for this one?
haha, dunno but I'll try and keep motivated. Hopefully not 4 years like the ripper. I've sent these pics to Steve and he's pretty excited about it. I'm going to do him one for letting me borrow his beloved bike.

nah i know it wasnt a dig, and yeah, ridiculous amount of parts. look at the tuf neck stem i made for the ripper then look at the stem on the v10 (its part of the forks but insanely more complicated than a tuf neck.
-
here we go again! :D
you don't make life easy for yourself do you Joe? great stuff
-

The madness begins again ,prepare to be amazed  :coolsmiley:
We all know if anything like the unbelieveable attention to detail the Ripper had , is going to be re-created in this bike ,
we are all in for a treat :4_17_5:
BTW Joe , excellent choice of candidate Steve Peat is THE legend of DH/MTB
Gonna be a great tribute :)

you don't make life easy for yourself do you Joe? great stuff
Yeah, dunno whats wrong with me. seriously, if i haven't got something to make or something to think about how to make i start losing the plot.
look at this fancy dress costume i made the other day, I only wore it to a house party but once i had the idea i couldn't not make it... weird! :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2:

;D yeah, fancy dress costumes is one of my strong points. The octo attack is a follow up to a costume I've worn about 7 times.

great project joe, look forward to following this one :daumenhoch:
-
Mega Joe ;) , look forward to updates .
Those costumes :LolLolLolLol:
-
Damn right this is an iconic Downhiller :4_17_5: it's an amazing bike for sure and will no doubt look awsome when its done, :daumenhoch:
Would be cool to do a Chris Boadman Lotus at some point 8)
-
It's gonna be awesome. don't envy you making the tyres up for that beast ;D
-
blimey folloowed the ripper from start to finish over 4 years looks like im gonna follow this new project looks a bit more challenging cant wait till 2016 :daumenhoch:
-
Once again, I'm stunned already :4_17_5:
Can I request you do a motocross bike after this one?
-
Fantastic. What a great choice. Very iconic bike & rider! This was an amazing win for Steve, it meant more to him than when he equaled Nico's race record.
I would love to see this in the flesh...can i visit?!!
This is going to look awesome, you are truly a skilled man.
-
Looking forward to seeing the finished product :daumenhoch:
-
... follow up to a costume I've worn about 7 times.

If you seriously wanna have a look then speak to Pete (Quadraphenia) about when he's coming in. He lives right near my work, saves me having to tell the bossman people are coming more than once.

Just tried out a nipple in the mock up wheel!
-
Nice nipple, looks so good I'd like to give it a little tweak!!!
-
Nice nipple, looks so good I'd like to give it a little tweak!!!
Indeed, I'd probably pull at the belt a little too. ;D
Nice build. :daumenhoch:
-
that is goone be awesome mate, will be watching this closely :daumenhoch:
-
finally got round to getting this rim finished. next i need to do the hub then mould them both so i can cast a few and start lacing up wheels!!!
So i turned the rim on the lathe. In this pic i'm using a blade to try and guage what the radius looks like so i can match it when i turn it around.
Then I put it on the milling machine and used the dividing head to drill 32 holes. If it had been a 36 spoke wheel then i could've drilled a hole every ten degrees but as it was a 32 spoke wheel I had to do a hole every 11.25 degrees... annoying!
In this pic you can see a couple of straight holes, the big hole is for the valve and the one with the detail has had the little tube that i cnc'd pushed into it.
I turned a channel in the back so there's room for the spoke nipples and stuff, then the tubes could be pushed in from the back and glued.
Heres the little tubes.
All done.
And with some primer on it, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It looks really crisp and sharp to should look amazing when painted silver with decals!

:daumenhoch: yet again, just blown away
-
:4_17_5: :daumenhoch:
-
I don't even like MTBs and I'm hooked...
Joe, you are officially an evil genius, if you ever turn your hand to making 1/3 scale killer robots we're all fooked :'( :'( :'(
-
wow :daumenhoch:
-
Gobsmacked yet again , totally mind blowing Joe :4_17_5:
Can't wait for the next update :)
-
Awesome work and skills :daumenhoch:
-
unreal think this thread needs a stickie
-
oh just noticed it has.lol
-
Awesome.
Again.
:daumenhoch:
-
Speechless!! superb work :daumenhoch:
-
Damn  Your work is serious sick mate  :daumenhoch:
-
So I've been making the hubs this week.
I started off by turning the main bulk of it on the lathe.
Then put them on the cnc milling machine to cut the disc mount shape bit.
The one on the left is the rear and bottom right is the front
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/b253/rakas17/a3126c8f.jpg)
Then got a bit of primer on them.
Heres the real ones for comparison.
Front
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/b253/rakas17/2c767af1.jpg)
Rear
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/b253/rakas17/434feb1e.jpg)
It's easier for me to put the spoke holes in them after they've been cast so that'll come later.
-
Looking great, so the two you have made arent going to be used, you will make a mould from them and make cast from that?
If so so what happens to all the original parts, will you build up another one using them?
-
Yes correct. These will be used to make a mould and then probably stashed away somewhere. It's useful to keep the patterns as I might need to remould them at a later date.
-
Skilled, doesn't do you justice Joe. I can't wait to see more updates. Do you know if Steve is checking progress or will he just see the finished replica?
-
Yeah I send him pics and updates and he replies with things like "ey up joe, that looks spot on does that" haha, proper Sheffield! He's gonna love it when it's done. I printed out a 1 to 1 scale colour print for the size of the model and couldn't believe how big it's gonna be. It's the same scale as the ripper but obviously a big travel downhill rig is way bigger than an 80's bmx!
-
Mental as per usual Joe :D
Great skills mate :4_17_5:
-
So I thought I'd have a go at freestyling the seat as it would be grief to try and draw in CAD.
I started off with one of the old kashi's from the ripper as I figured they would have a similar general shape and it was already semetrical and stuff.
Then I started just covering it in body filler until it looked more likem the WTB seat.
when I was happy with it I marked where the stitching is on the seat and stuck down some thin lines of masking tape (forgot to do photos at this stage, sorry) to represent the raised embroidery.
Then I painted it with 2pac primer to soften the whole thing off. So I gave it a clean up and moulded it in silicone so I could cast them in resin like before.
Heres a pic of the pattern (grey) and a couple of resin castings. Theres also a start of a rail in this pic.
Heres some pics of the model seat with the real seat, looking at these now I see more and more differences every time I look at them. It should be fine though when it's painted and stickered etc...

Nice work.
You got fook all on at work or what ::)
-
Exactly, my resources are getting drained so I'm trying to be productive and smash out as much of this as I can while I've got the chance. Should really be being productive looking for work but can't be arsed and wanna get this done ;D

:daumenhoch:
Mind blowing as always

unbeleivable....amazed, yet again joe
Dave

Amazing attention to detail, Joe you are a real talent :daumenhoch:
-
any updates on this 'little' project? :D

hopefully Joe has stopped coccking about with this and is turning his hand to making more DX end caps ;D :daumenhoch:

I'd forgotten about this, skills. :4_17_5:
-
Bloody amazing!! Will be keeping a close eye on this :daumenhoch:
-
havent done anything onn this for a bit, been busy trying to start up my own drift trike company "JR Drift Trikes"
Here's me and my cousin doing a bit of product testing. He's a racing car driving instructor, as you can see his racing instinct takes over and he stuffs me into the curb, haha
I've got a meeting today with a guy about getting maybe a hundred made in taiwan, watch this space...

look a right laugh they do 8)
-
They're seriously fun, and really easy to use! :)
-
Whoaaaa
They drift just as good in the dry  :4_17_5:
Saw the original Trike night car park edit 8)
It's not before time we had an update ::) :LolLolLolLol:
Good to hear from you and your progress Joe :daumenhoch:
-
Yep, infact its more fun in the dry cos you dont get pis5ing wet ;D
But yeah, you dont need rain, the back wheels are gokart wheels with polyethylene gas pipe over them. They step out as soon as you give the front a little flick, you can hang it out for ages, it scrubs quite a bit of speed off though so once your sideways you have the dilema of holding your drift for longer or keeping more speed for the next corner. When theres 2 of you side by side arse end out at 20 odd mph about 3 inches from the ground its the absolute bollox!
-
Keep us updated Joe,I will be up for one of these! :daumenhoch:
-
Yep will do. :daumenhoch:
-
I love threads like this. I read them any time I feel clever and they ground me nicely ;D
-
Joe, Gobsmaked by the work as always mate
Keep me in the loop about the drift trikes would you ??? Got a park near me which would be purfect for one of those :daumenhoch:erfect

someone please get Joe rakas back on here, I can't stand seeing him as a "guest" and I'd like to hear the end of the story

This is a great thread, I'll be watching this one.
Your eye to detail is first class.
BTW your fancy dress costumes are 1st class too.

Absolutely (http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v521/fischflo/naughty.gif) ... There are those who found these threads already, and those who haven't seen em yet
