Title: Are There Any BMX's You Really Like....But Would Never Own?
Post by: Retrodan72 on July 24, 2015, 07:32 PM
Let me explain.

Every week, I look at some amazing builds, both here and FB and think wow, that's a stunning build, but it ends there.

I saw 2 bikes today, a JMC and a Curtis , both were absolute belters, but I've no desire to own one of either.

Anyone else have a love for a bike, but not enough to ever own one?

Actually yeah.....

Mid eighties GT freestylers, and Skyway streetbeats.

Have seen some lovely builds of both on here, but they just don't get the juices flowing.....

I know just what you mean Lee, I'm not a mid school fan, but I saw that white WAL earlier this week, and thought it looked the business, but haven't gone back for a 2nd look (sorry to the owner).

Iain Bowden's DB Silver Steak though, I keep going back to that.

I guess it's all down to personal preference really, but I'm sure most of us can appreciate an excellent build, whether we would shell out to have one in the man cave, or not.

I love loads, but I'm not responsible enough to own anything too nice, I will trash it or throw it in temper

Yep, JMC, top end Hutch, VDC.......etc.  I tend to build what i remember from my youth and the more exotic US stuff wasn't exactly thick on the ground on a council sink estate in the West Midlands..... I'd never even heard of Cook Bros till i got back into the BMX thing.  I do think some of them are stunning though, especially the JMCs.

Also JMC for me, which is really strange as I rode for them BITD, I just never had the desire to build one.

Some good comments lads.

I agree about those 91-92ish Haro's, Wini had a blue Sport a few years ago, I thought it was gorgeous, but not enough to make me want one, because I think, like someone else said, I don't remember them BITD.

Believe it or not VDC. I appreciate they're rare but it ends there I'm afraid.

A couple really Dan.

Firstly, I would like a Pro Burner frame, like I had back then. Local to us was a Raleigh shop and one of the Team riders had a new frame sent to the shop for pick up as he had cracked the gusset on his. My friend Stuart managed to blag the frame from the shop owner for £10 and after hassling him for a few months, I managed to get it off him. I know I would get 'raped' buying one now so I will not pursue one.

Secondly, a catalogue mark one Super Tuff like I bought from Kays. They are abysmal to ride so would not waste my money having a corner dust collector  :(

Diamondback Turbolite.

The most badass of minis.

No intention of having one though.

Also any Flatland bike……fascinated by them but don't wanna own one.

I'd love a jmc too, Terry's build totally blew me away but I won't get round to it. A kid near me bitd had a silver streak that just looked the business, those big db gussets.....
Won't get to that either.

A Nomura.

Totally lush ... could never justify having that amount of cash sat around.

A Trickstar for me. Only because if I had one I'd have to have a set of Aerospeeds on it (just like I can only have flights on my redlines) and that's just too much...

Another for me is (and this sounds awful considering what has recently happened) SE Racing, PK Ripper, Quadangle, Floval etc.

I respect the brand, however they have never pushed my buttons enough to want one.

When i first saw the headline if this thread I immediately thought JMC,  I have built everything I loved, wanted and owned and dime stuff I never really liked like hutch,  now I've culled it down to just 4 complete builds I really like,  I just cannot justify anymore right now,  ice probably done 120 bikes,  some being the same one several times....

Its long gone Ed.  :daumenhoch: Which is exactly why I make the point. Loved the look of it, bought it, and just never fell in love with it. I still think they look awesome, especially the pre 92 ones, but wont buy another.

For me it's Haro's and Mongoose. Loads of nice ones about but just dont float my boat.
Maybe its because no one had them when we were growing up so they don't mean anything to me.

A great thread Dan ( as always ) ... I love Andy's VDC but price and the fact I have no real memories of them from back in the day stops me from buying one...
Mongooses too ... I love 'em but can't see myself ever owning one ... It just doesn't float my boat enough.. Never say never though!  :LolLolLolLol:

Been meaning to post on here for a while but kept forgetting due to vodka, holidays and work getting in the way :2funny: :uglystupid2:

For me it's Hutch, VDC, JMC and all the really exotic stuff that I have absolutely no memory of from BITD. Don't get me wrong, they look absolutely fantastic but we were doing well if we haf a Tange-built Burner, a GT or a Mongoose where we grew up, so for me they are my memory of BMX. I've built a lot of Haros and MRDs and even a TA as I remember those from mags at the time and of course seeing them on TV.

Only one I have left on my list is a Curtis. I nearly ended up with a Curtis Expert f&f instead of my Mongoose Cali in '83 but I just loved ProClass wheels so the 'Goose swung it...... damn, I wish I'd chosen the Curtis :idiot2:

Great thread Dan btw - see you next weekend mate  :daumenhoch:

Yeah, great thread Dan! As others have said, although I can appreciate a good build, sometimes they just push the right buttons for whatever reason. Ignoring monetary constraints, I can't see me ever owning anything mid-90s or newer.

Firstly, a Knight Goose retro, but the only person I know who has one is Rob Pickle and he's not selling...

Also, Kappa made a VDC retro some years ago, I say made, it was 2 protos, want one but will never be able to find or even afford one.

I am really into the one off retros, Kappa, Knight, Johnny Chopper, but now that they have all stopped making frames they are becoming expensive...

Surprised its not been mentioned before, but every month I'd like to own the winner of BOTM, what brand / model it is!
Title: Re: Are There Any BMX's You Really Like....But Would Never Own?

There are too many to list that I like but wouldn't own and the reason is that Ihave tried to collect bikes that have some meaning to me.  They are either the same as I had bitd or that I really wanted bitd and one or two I have that are purely the connection between old school and today's new school bikes.

There also some that I wouldn't buy based purely on my experience from working in a bike shop from 1980 through to early 2000 but mostly my time there in the 80s!

Although I built a few freestylers with my son in an effort to get him interested, freestyle has never really been my thing.

I do appreciate some of the simpler frame sets like the Gen 1 and RL20II but i'll never build one.

It was nice and different indeed, but it never got my juices flowing and to be honest since selling it a few years ago, today was the first time I thought about the bike.

Gen 1 Haro,
i had one of the first ones in the country bitd and hated it, they look stunning and some of the builds on here of them are lush but i hate the way they ride and was so disapointed with my one bitd that i went back to riding my PK and swapped the Haro for a Kuwie with someone. i've never felt like building one since but i love the look of them.
also 2nd gen quads for the same reason.
