Okay, every year we do a small ride around the streets of London for a chosen charity.....As some of you may know i work in the NHS and the people at work asked if i would do something for them instead?
So come September 11th myself, Griff, Spike371 and Level have signed up to do a London to Brighton ride on our BMXs :idiot2:
part of the Trust that i work for is called The St Marks Trust and is nationally known as one of the best bowel and intestinal Hospitals in the country, they perform ground breaking surgery and were one of the first places to do bowel cancer screening.
We have put a couple of justgiving sites together, Griff has done a seperate one due to his firm promising to match the first £500 he raises, so please feel free to donate a few quid to either of them (it all goes to the same place i guess) and if anyone else wants to join us (there is a couple of others from my Trust doing it as well) then please feel free and just let me know so i can send you the links :daumenhoch:

come on radsters get your names down and join us :daumenhoch:
hoping enough of us will sign up and we'll be able to raise a great big chunk of cash this year, as well as take over Brighton with the BMX 8)
-
Let me check that I'm available and I'll do it too :daumenhoch:

Let Pickle know when you have signed up so he can add you to the team list
So will you be riding up the night before??? :D
-
been messing about on pc after scanning my race plate - wanted to see how it might look as I was worried I wouldn't be able to fit many sponsor names on there
should have plenty of room actually even after putting the St Mark's logo on (sorry pickle couldn't resist giving it the Brighton 'rainbow' treatment )
will do the real one in proper colours ;D

-
Justin! you shouldn't show people that until after they've signed up FFS ;D
actually I'm not sure if I like the look of 'the beacon' but at least the last bit is downhill
now let's see if anyone else signs up ::)
-
Ohhh!!!!! I'll be leaving now. Sorry
Think I'll be tempted to set the GPS on my Iphone and see what the old DB will max out at! That downhill defiantly make is worth while!
-

;D I will resist the urge to put a bigger cog on the front!
-
Everyone has been telling me about that 'little' hill at the end :(
Still, after 46 miles im sure we wont give in to it ;D
-
Not a chance mate, we stick together, keep the pace up and take it in turns at the front to pull each other to the top.
-
trust me - you DON'T want to ride in my slipstream
can we still stop for a nice ploughman's and a pint on the way?
-
Does slipstream even work at 4mph?
-
every little helps :daumenhoch:
-
evening radsters
since we've now had a month of fundraising between us, just wanted to give you a quick update on the Team RAD total in the pot :daumenhoch:
current total raised is £535 (including fundmatching but not including the gift aid that goes on top :daumenhoch:)
still plenty of time to get your names down for this, but the sooner you take the plunge the more we can raise 8)
cheers
griff
-
What time are you lot setting off ?
I'll look out for you, as I fly past you on my Road bike ;D
-

road bike? pfffft
are you doing this ride too? join us on our proper bikes - you can still wear a road biker's spandex freddie mercury suit and bellend shaped helmet if you like :daumenhoch:
think we'll need to set off quite early, not sure how that bit works yet tho

I would love to, but I'm not totally off my fooking head ;D
No seriously I've been doing this for the last few years as part of team TP (Travis Perkins) my brother is a director so we get food stops, lifts there & back, it is a good day out + I love the road biker's spandex freddie mercury suit and bellend shaped helmet's :-* & I look good in it :daumenhoch:
-
just checked the Team RAD page at http://www.justgiving.com/teams/bmxlondontobrighton/ and it's already at a whopping £540 - including the fundmatching from my work that puts us dead on £900 :daumenhoch:
still a long way to go before the day, but just imagine how much we could raise if we had a few more team members on board...
come on guys let's see some more of your names on the list and some more BMXs in Brighton 8)
-
Seriously are you guys gunna be doing this on old skool bmx's???
-
oh yes :daumenhoch: doesn't have to be old school, could be new school if that's more appealing?
you interested?
-
Griff im already doing this ride in June on my old 97 Kona Uhu, im not sure if my old legs will take it on a bmx :crazy2:
-
How many miles is it??

so far there's 4 of us confirmed on BMX - Pickle's got a couple of mates on MTBs doing it as well
waiting for confirmation from messrs Gashead and Dirtyvans but more the merrier - and Team RAD can raise a stack of cash :daumenhoch:
not sure on start time yet but will probably need to be reasonably early!

The Team RAD total, including match funding and Gift Aid currently stands at £1,234 :daumenhoch:
Still got 171 days to go, so plenty of time to sign up and join in :)
-
you wont need a fat saddle, couple of mates done it on bmx a few years ago, done it under 6hrs, you always see people on bmx bikes doing it, do it on a unicycle to be different, would love to come but i going to interbike in LAS VEGAS

Despite its faultless beauty everyone knows the Elina, like pretty much every other 80s BMX seat was sadly not also designed for comfort - it will be there under the squashy padding and the delightful snakepost is still visible to all ;)
unicycle next year Pete :daumenhoch:

since the nice weather's started I thought it might be worth a little bump for this - 158 days until we do it, so still plenty of time to join up and do a bit of training :daumenhoch:
so far I've managed a few runs of about 8 miles with no problems at all (thanks to the gel padding in that seat cover!) but with padded shorts as well and a whole day to do it 54 should be a breeze
just checked the team fundraising total and with matchfunding/gift aid included we're already a few pence over £1,400 :)
I've found that people at work have been surprisingly generous with their donations (much more so than for previous trekking/running-type stuff) and it's also been a very good way to come out of the 'bmx closet' :daumenhoch:
just think how much we can raise with a few more riders on board.......
DO IT!

I've been doing my part with 30 plus on the road bike and a ten mile on the DB. Which took its toll and i've proper bust the BB now! new one from Evil Bay should arrive in the next few days.
Also, managed to get my ugly face in the local rag, much to the amusement of everyone I know. Had some pretty good feedback from a few local companies regard sponsorship. but nothing in the form of a donation yet.
Oh, and Rob Ridge gave me £25, such a nice chap.
Me, looking like a dick! The rest of you guys got a mention too, which was nice http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/localnews/8954266.Son_s_inspire_dad_s_charity_bike_ride/
Peace

great work mate - hope this generates a few more quid in your collection!!!
I'm up to 10 miles per session now on the haro - so far my harris is holding up well thanks to padded seat cover :daumenhoch:

FFS ..
-
Well done Griff!
-
That is bloody top stuff fella
-
dammit - just noticed the valve caps on the front and rear wheels aren't aligned :-[
will I be excused considering I'm sitting on the bike?
-
Great stuff :4_17_5:
-
just to give you a quick update - Team RAD's current total (including fund matching and gift aid) is a whopping £1559.23! Not bad for a few eejits on children's bicycles...
there's still time to sign up btw ;)
-
That's awesome John! i've got the Assassin at work today with the plan to ride the 20 miles home....but the weather's not looking good so might not happen :-\
great stuff getting in the local rag :daumenhoch:
-
Quick update for anyone that's interested - Team Rad's current total is £2,314.23 for the L2B run :)
89 days left until our little adventure, so still plenty of time to join up / do a bit of fundraising
-
That's awesome John!! I haven't really got going with the fund raising yet at work or home as it's a little far away.....will kick peoples arses nearer the time :daumenhoch:
-
i see griff yesterday, tbh i think he should have left 2 weeks ago if he wants to get there on time :-\
-

you don't have to worry dear pete, i've started carb loading already
:daumenhoch:
-
i did this on a Torker in '92 & it wasn't that bad. OK we did it with the heart foundation lot but it was easier than we thought it would be & tbh if you hadn't had to ride near 50 miles to get to it the beacon would be do-able (almost!)
we did it in under 5 hours & that included stops for nosebleeds etc as i was a bit dehydrated from the all day sesh the day before ::)
-
I knew it all along, but public transport is fooking shite
did a bit of research today to try and sort out a train time to get to Clapham Common from my nearest station (Bracknell or Wokingham) on the Sunday morning
reckon we'll need to be setting off pretty early so was aiming to get there for about 8:00
Turns out there isn't one ::) The train website helpfully suggested getting one at midnight (overnight stay in South London park...?)
Best option I found is to drive 11 or so miles to Slough and then get on the 6:46 to Paddington
Since my Haro is not a folding bicycle it looks like I'll also be banished from the tube line that goes to Clapham Common
Ho-hum, should change the page I set up to 60milesonaBMX I suppose ;D
What time are the rest of Team RAD expecting to get there?
-
If we all get there Saturday afternoon, maybe we could start then ;D
Might get to Brighton the same time as everyone else then :2funny:
Its gonna be a long day dude 8)
-
Ok, I,m not a hardcore member on the Radbmx forum but would love to join in. Just dusted of an old supergoose 2 , just needs a seat and to be built up. Just pulled out of a 5 day stage race the week before, so need something to aim for. Where do I sign up properly for the ride and were do I put money raised ?
Might wimp out and have bibshorts on under my "normal" shorts ;)
Cant get myself to put a water bottle holder on a BMX, so will be a rucksack job...
Been a prat, just found the link to the charity page...sorry too many head injuries.

found the links anyway now so just in case anyone else needs it
This link http://www.doitforcharity.com/doitforcharity-cycle-ride-2011.aspx?c=4371&ad=charitypage should take you straight to registration to raise money for Pickle's hospital (which is a great cause) but if you want to do it for another charity there's loads to choose from at http://www.doitforcharity.com/difc-london-to-brighton-cycle-2011.aspx
Once you sign up get a justgiving page and it can be linked to the Team Rad group page ;)
http://www.justgiving.com/teams/BMXlondontobrighton
Trying my best to get there for an 8:30 start (depending on public transport)

Sounds a good time john, we can discuss it at MK :daumenhoch:

probably about time I started proper training instead of loafing about and eating kebabs
-
Thanks Griff, should just about be able to make MK on the Sunday, hope to catch up with some old faces there and some of you loons that want to ride 56 miles on a small wheeled bike.
Might let my supergoose 2 go and build up my unused repo Kuwi KZi I bought when living down under. Worth trying to sell frames at MK ?....safer than the bay of evil ?

nice one mate - I'll be there both days so come & say hello
I think lots of people are selling stuff - I'm looking to sell a mk1 Asco Pro Turbo frame myself so will probably be taking that along
cheers
griff
-
Just told the Mrs about this little adventure, she said " I thought you have packed in road racing"
Christ women...were not racing to Brighton.....hope not !
-
racing? f**k that
I'll just be happy to get there
let me know if you need any help with the admin mate :daumenhoch:
-
Hope to catch up with you on sunday Griff !
-
If I don't have enough todo I'm thinking of knocking up a tee design, so we have something to keep from the event. I wont be selling them, but will give you guys the design so you can get yours printed in the colour and size you want. was thinking of using http://www.spreadshirt.co.uk/
What cha think?
J
-
sorry missed you 4416 - did you make it to MK?
level I think pickle's sorted some t-shirts from st. marks but not 100% sure.. rob can confirm
nothing to stop you from having one though!
-
yep i can get official T's from St Marks.
Once you register it i'm sure it asks what size you want? ???

but ignore me, I really just need sleep. lots and lots of sleep.
J

right then guys, we need to start making plans for this now.
I will speak to the organisers at work and get a definate meeting point (although i think it's Clapham common) then we need a time (try for 8am??) then we need to decide what the general feeling is for when we arrive? are people hving a beer and then going back home, or going to bed down at a Travel lodge and make a night of it?
i haven't thought to much about what to do once we gt there :-\

have been sending emails to the difc people to try and get exact details (still haven't received my info pack and wanted to check it wasn't lost in post)
as far as I now it's starting in clapham common though. have looked into public transport my way (which is pretty much non-existent esp. on a sunday) and best time I can make it is going to be around 8:30 - I need to drive to slough and dump car there, then train it to paddington @ 6:46 and ride 6 miles through war-torn london village to the start point. any remaining rioters will probably be tucked up in bed so should be safe enough ;D
I'm flexible on getting back as have booked the monday off - if anyone is headed back up that way & can accommodate me & my bike then I'm more than happy to chip in for petrol etc, otherwise can just see how the night goes & get the train back the next day :daumenhoch:
-
Just had an email from the organisers - turns out this is starting from tooting bec common now instead of clapham
For anyone in Brighton we'll be finishing at Hove No 1 Lawn, adjacent to the King Alfred Leisure Centre and alongside Hove Street
On the plus side this is a shorter route than going from clapham, but seeing as public transport is so shit that just means I have to ride further to get to the start line :tickedoff: from what I can see I'm not able to take my bike on the tube down there from paddington
-
john, let me know what time you will get tp paddington and i will meet you and we'll go together :daumenhoch:
-
john, let me know what time you will get tp paddington and i will meet you and we'll go together :daumenhoch:
it's due in at 7:20am (that's the first train of the day from slough) :daumenhoch:
-
cool.....we'll work it mate :daumenhoch:
-
I reckon I'll be fooked before we get going leaving the house that early ;D
btw I think I found a way to hook up a bottle cage to a bmx - ordered one of these http://cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=21110&categoryID=1090
-
jeeze, I need more that 500ml of water. I've got one like this, 2.5 ltrs of water. Mind you, it site next to your back, so after an hour its warm, after 2 you could make a coffee with it!
-
I'm sure we'll get chance to refill on the way :daumenhoch:
didn't fancy carrying a sweaty rucksack so travelling light and making do with a small bag for tubes/mini pump etc that I can put on handlebars
really hope it doesn't piss down ;D
-
I gotta catch a train on sat, and stay over in town, then ride, then stay over in Brightion, then a train home to Dorset. I reckon I'll be needing new clothes on sunday!
Whats everyone taking spares and parts wise?
-
I'll be taking my 'cool tool', a mini pump and a couple of tubes (+ beer money for afters)
Pickle will probably need about 5 chains as he usually snaps at least one an hour
You may wish to consider a large tub of arse cream for when you've finished - unless you've got that seat padded
-
Okay, for those that have registered through the www.doitforcharity.com website you should've got a document emailed back to you containing all the info.
Basically the route is laid out with pink arrows all along the way. at about half distance there is a pub where we all get free lunch! :daumenhoch: but basically it's not a race, so we stop whenever we need to for breaks and water/energy drinks :)
we need to all be at Tooting bec by 9am so we can all register and set off. my work mates and i will be there and we're probably going to drive my mates car down on the saturday and park it up, then i'll drive back and we will use his estate car to travel back on Sunday evening.
-
Im going for the padded seat... and padded riding shorts!
Tubes, pump and a few tools (on BMX's)!
I'm so looking forward to this ride, its going to be epic!

that sounds like a good plan rob - except by the halfway stage they might have started serving dinner
do you think there'll be any room for a +1 on the way back? can offer petrol money/cuddles by way of compensation
-
i'm sure we could fit you in somehow, he's got an A6 estate so should be room, i will ask on Monday :daumenhoch:

nice one rob, just let me know :daumenhoch:
-
managed (after sending a few emails!) to find out my rider number, so I've had a mess about with photoshop and put a raceplate design together :daumenhoch:
still got room for a few more sponsors' names and have been badgering a few people at work who already promised to support
Jaymz hope you don't mind I nicked a couple of your designs for that 'factory-rider' look ;D

1 of my work collegues is hopefully driving me into London on the Sunday morning, then driving down to Brighton to bring me home, so i will be loading his van with spares ;D ;D

I've managed to find some cheap digs, got a cheap rail ticket too (£5.55 back to victoria on Monday)
just need to find somewhere to park in london now and hope that no-one burns out the car while I'm away
whereabouts are you coming from spike?

Coming up from Folkestone, Kent mate 8)

let me know if you find anywhere to park :daumenhoch: did try one of those websites where people rent out their own drives etc but no answer - so had a look on google street view to see if I could find a street without permit parking. best I found so far looked to be west drive, not too far away but no idea if dodgy or not
-
hey Griff,
what website did you buy the train ticket from?
-

The wheel design's on spreadshirt.co.uk - will post a link as soon as I can get onto site and make it publicly available ;)
[edit] here's the link http://637217.spreadshirt.co.uk/
don't forget - if you want a 5% discount code just ask the helpdesk people anything via email and there'll be a link in their reply
-
if there's anyone left out there that wants to sponsor me - I'm having my race plate made up early next week (see below)
everyone that sponsors me before the weekend's up gets their name added to the plate, no matter what the amount :daumenhoch:
why not go without one pint this weekend and instead give it to Rob 'Tower of Strength' Pickle's bum hospital? after all you never know when you'll have to visit Dr. Jellyfinger...
cheers
griff
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ad120/gr1ff1ngton/bmx/raceplate2.jpg)

still plenty of time for peeps to bung us a few quid sponsorship :daumenhoch:
links to the justgiving pages are on page 1.................any amount however small is all welcome :daumenhoch:
-
my t-shirt arrived today - looks fookin ace
can't tell from the crappy phone pic but the reflective material really catches the light (had to turn light off & use a torch as using a flash just wouldn't work!)

I hope they're both wrong as currently they're saying Brighton's gonna have heavy rain and 30mph winds on Sunday

Shame Rob, yellow would suit you :-*
I hope that Del kept a copy of my decal designs, have a feeling that I might need another set by the end of this!
Got my bike in the office today so I can show people just how unsuitable it will be as a long distance machine, hoping to generate a few more sponsors too ;)
Fingers crossed for a gap in the clouds!!!!!

mate don't forget there's another wedge coming from my work, they promised to fund-match the first £500 ;)
Still a few peeps to tap up at work - after taking my bike into the office yesterday they now know how small (but heavy) my haro is ::)
would be tempted to use the silverfox as it's a lot lighter, but as the seatpost is stuck tight I can't get it to a good height for road riding
-
i think with the wind we'll be getting, weight will be a good thing! ;D (as he tucks into another digestive) :daumenhoch:
-

just looked again and still none of the weather sites are disagreeing with each other :'(
I see that the winds will be coming from the SW too, so no chance of using a sail for extra propulsion...!
-
we will earn every chip and flake of fish mate when we get there!! ;D
i just hope we're all laughing still by the time we do get there
-
I just hope my bike makes it!
picked up 2 new inner tubes and a padded seat cover today (get that baby to fit tonight) packed a set of allen keys, driver set and a multi tool, set of cable ties and a pair of tire levers. wet weather jacket, padded shorts (wet denim in no fun) sunglasses and a mesh back.

Excuse this if its a little random. Just got in after driving 3 1/2 hours home.
A top ride with top blokes went down today. We showed our heels to plenty of faster bikes, especially tucking in and drafting down the big slopes only. The bikes went well, nothing broke or fell off but they did gain a few more creaks.
All the other riders were talking about the madmen on BMX's, that was nice, especially as most didnt know it was us!
And finally, thanks to you guys for making this ride just plain amazing.
Oh, and did I mention the massive cheer we received when we crossed the line?
Bad photos here http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/level_/
Goodnight.
-
It was great riding with you yesterday Lee........it was fooking hard work but such a great day and an awesome welcome by everyone at the finish line :daumenhoch:

TBH Rob, on more than one occasion i considered giving up, but as the miles ticked away it seemed pointless. When you have done 40+ miles, the last 10 or say are not worth giving up on ;D
So glad i finished, although im knackered today
Top result all round guys :daumenhoch:
-

-
you're not wrong paul, was very tough in places but some of the down hill bits were fantastic, especially the high speed blast down through the town :daumenhoch:
buzzing that with the help of lots of generous people we've managed to raise a good chunk of money for a worthy cause that doesn't get much attention normally, back at work tomorrow so hoping it's not over yet!
seriously recommend this to anyone for next year (paul I think you'd love it :daumenhoch:)

I'm in!
-
I'm happy to let someone else savour the experience next year ;D, still trying to think 'what next' but also mindful that I've had a lot off money off people for this and probably need to cool the sponsored events for a bit
would seriously recommend it to anyone though - was a great day :daumenhoch:
-
Just read up on this as really looking forward to it this year! It's nuts but I've never been quite normal lol.
