Title: Mongoose II build
Post by: tonyo on January 24, 2014, 06:40 PM
Well somehow I deleted the thread I started yesterday. :-)
So I try again
My original bike which I bought new in 81. It was originally blue. One piece crank. Single stem etc.It was at the lower end spec wise of Mongoose II options as I was 12 years old and had to part ex my grifter to help pay.  I desperately wanted that mongoose !
Anyway.

Dropouts to be repaired

The off to see SuperbikeDan to try to find the correct blue. He had done just one frame before and this is pretty much it.

The finish and service from Dan is excellent. Can't say thanks enough.
He had to fine blast the frame and saved all the detail as well as the frame number. Very pleased !

Parts to be fitted... I hope they are what I should be fitting for the era.
I am going to ride this bike mind.

Cheers !
Waiting for the bars and seat post to come back from anodisers. Then it's what to do with the seat ? I have the original. It's tatty and the rails need chroming, that's if I can get them out mind you.
After that it's the silly hard to get pads.

Update. Bought some super goose bars instead of the cheap nasty ones I had.
Got to be chromed but pretty good.
Changing the chain wheel shortly too.
But this is where it's at

Not sure if this is 'ok' but as a kid I always wanted the fluted seat post. Just back from anodisers with my other bars.
Thanks for the comments by the way.

Sweet looking build bud. That's a lovely colour which I think the Wire Wheel came in too.

What seat are you using?

Hi mr.
I have my original seat but it's a bit battered. The rails need re chroming too. I will have a think.
And cheers for the comments.

The grips turned up yesterday. Colour is pretty spot on so thanks to Superbike Dan on that one bearing in mind the grips are remade too.

Seat is going to need some work. And the rails need Houdini to get them out for chroming.

On a more positive note the smaller 39t chain wheel arrived.

Thanks fellas. This is my first attempt and it was to be my only attempt. But I am enjoying this so much I have bought another frame for a future job.
Got a few issues to sort out. I ordered a new freewheel but it's the wrong size. And then the correct colour pads.
What do you think on brake caliper colour? I originally bought the blue ones. Then bought some silver ones so don't know what to do ?

I'd stick with the black chainring and go for a black brake set up, grips and seat. Think the black looks lovely against the blue, but that's just me.  ???
You've got a job on your hands bringing that seat back up to the same standard as the rest of the bike. Invest in a nice new one.  :daumenhoch:
Looking sweet though.  ;)

Re the black chainring it's gonna have to go as the chain angle makes the chain sit very close to the frame tube.
But me too like the black.   Mmmm will have a think

Well I slipped up on the 39t chain wheel. I wanted to run 39/14 but since discovered the 14t rear freewheel is designed to fit the smaller hub and not my Suntour. Apparently there used to be one available but not any more. Unless anyone knows of where to get one I will go back to 44/16.

mongoose used shimanno cassette hubs so they could use the 14t :daumenhoch:

And finally the Supergoose bars are here.
Not over happy with the remade mx1000. Fitted an original adjuster but still not nice.
I have some nos mx901 calipers  in blue but the rear doesn't seem to fit right in so much the brake pad wants to kiss the tyre. I don't know much about these tbh. Maybe they didn't fit in the first place :-)
Anyway just some pre bent levers to fit and it's pretty much ready for me to ride.

All done. Not happy with the repop mx1000s. A little better with genuine adjusters on mind. But will do for now. I want to ride it !
Got out today briefly. Shocked how fast these bikes turn in! It's been 30 years since I rode this and as well as the turn speed I can no longer wheelie , bunny hop or cross up!!  :-)
Think I might shorten the cables slightly but here we are. Hope it's up to standard
