when i was a kid my 1st bike was a raleigh GS burner """ thats all my parents could afford """ . but i longed for a bmx with skyways on so they said next year i could have one . so for a year i had to pass our local bmx shop called "ritchies" and only drool over this bike . so to me i think its the most iconic bike of the 80,s even my nana knows what a tuff burner is
its in a bit of a mess at the minute

We all know that'll look like a spanker in a week or two!!
Only frame I ever broke was a mark 1 burner!! do you reckon they'd still honour the guarantee? (was it lifetime or just 25 years?)
I will be watching with interest!!

i must admit that as much as i love seeing rippers T/A's and the likes.the tuff burner to me also was the bike i always wanted as a lad. i think it was the colours on thing made it stand out a mile.

Got to agree with you, certainly in the UK anyway :daumenhoch:
Even the guys here at work who know feck all about bikes know what a Raleigh Tuff Burner is and what it looks like :LolLolLolLol:
It was the first BMX I can remember really wanting (got an Ammaco Team Special from my parents instead ::) ) hence why I built my own version a couple of years ago.

The Mk1 came out in 82 (got my Ultra that year) go for it Neil make it nice again :daumenhoch:
-
The iconic Mk1 TUFF Burner :Great_Britain:
Okay Neil... here's some spec stuff for you.
Released in 1982.
This is the brochure picture from the 1983 Raleigh Action Bikes Brochure.
(Take no notice of the chainring on this one, I have never seen ONE example fitted with this type, it is thought they were used for Brochure photo's ONLY!, Raleigh tended to do that alot..).
Remember Raleigh were late into the BMX scene and these initial models in 82' were rushed onto the market place... a fact that was clear in both Frame Design & Build :buck2:
This is the brochure picture from the early 83 Brochure...
This is the spec you need to be following. (text taken from Brochure)
Frame: HIGH TENSILE / TIG WELDED / FLAME RED OR BLAZE BLUE
Forks: HIGH TENSILE / TIG WELDED / MATT BLACK
Bars: HIGH TENSILE / V-BAR / MATT BLACK
Stem: SAKAE ALLOY / 4 BOLT BLACK
Headset: CHROME-STEEL BALL BEARINGS
Brakeset: ALL ALLOY / GOLD OR BLUE
Grips: BLACK FOAM GRIP & COLOURED CARTRIDGE / YELLOW OR BLUE
Saddle: RALEIGH-MX WITH SAFETY CLIP / RED OR BLUE
Seat Pin: HIGH TENSILE CHROME PLATED
Pedals: BLACK RAT-TRAP / STRENGTHENED AXLES
Crank: ONE-PIECE CRANK / HEAT TREATED / CHROME PLATED
Chainwheel: 40T HIGH TENSILE STEEL WITH DISC CHROME PLATED
Bottom Bracket: CHROME STEEL BALL BEARINGS
Chain: 88L X 1/2†X 1/8†/ GOLD OR BLACK
Sprocket: 16T FREEWHEEL
Wheels: YELLOW SKYWAY TUFF II WHEELS
Tyres: 2.125 FRONT / 1.75 REAR / SNAKEBELLY GUMWALL / YELLOW OR BLUE
Padset: 3 PADS / BLACK PRINT ON YELLOW VINYL
Weight: 14.3KG (31.5LB)
The early examples came with a Coaster Brake Tab welded on the rear chain stay
The catalogue stated that a RED Tuff Burner was part of the Burner line-up but very few examples exist, and it is thought that these may have been put together by Raleigh dealers.
The Mk1 Tough/Tuff was renamed the Mag Burner when it lost its Skyway Tuff II’s in place of Simplex 7 spoke Mag Wheels.

LOL. Most Geordies keep their coal in the bath so having a set of wheels sat in there for a few days should be no biggie... :D

we dont keep our coal there now we just let the wippet sleep in the bath and we keep it warm with all our cloth caps and by the way the dog lives on peas pudding and warm shandy as we both know the dog is a fooking puff for drinking warm shandy "can you send some more up again " !!!!!!!! ozone!!!!!!!
-
im looking more foward to seeing this one done than the ghp.
no matter what anybody says the bikes were on most kids wish list when they first come out.
i'd love one myself
-
Neil i agree with you its the 1st bmx i remember staring at when i wishing i was tall/old enough to ride, great to see you keeping your hand in the scene too :daumenhoch:
This will no doubt be a belter real soon by the pics your cracking on fast.
Why did you not keep your old tub in the yard for said diy job ;D Id have sever head injuries if i tried that :LolLolLolLol:
Hope you get them levers sorted btw they dont look too badly grinded.
-
cant wait to see the new eddie fiola bath tub :4_17_5:should be your
best one yet bud :LolLolLolLol:
-
The first thing i thought when i saw the plastic bath full of hot water and dye was you.ll end up with a yellow and white bath tub! :LolLolLolLol:
i take it placcy baths can't take dye then?!?
-
If that tub takes on some of the dye, everytime you run a bath it'll look like someone's taken a wizz in it ;D
Never mind getting in trouble for painting Tuff's, you might have to paint that tub ;D
You're build threads are just like The Fall, 'Alway different. Always the same'. Top entertainment :daumenhoch:

I have been following this thread just to see the bath at the end of it!! So howay man Neil lets see a pic of the bath then!!!
I can always remember Fenwicks had a crap bmx range!! Now Steeles of gosforth that had some good stuff in stock. I used to work for them and remember us being stuck with a changa and a jmc in the window for a while when the bottom fell out of BMX. And to think how much those frames are worth now eh!!
Got to say it though those tuffs have come out nice!
-
the bath is now sorted ,,,,,plenty of bleach and a little bit of elbow grease :buck2: :buck2: :buck2:
