Title: A couple of old Burners from me.... surprise! surprise!
Post by: beard1973 on January 21, 2011, 03:40 PM
Would you expect anything else from me...???  :buck2: :buck2: :buck2:

I completed these builds for some other people last night.

Its been nice building for someone else for a change, and its been great sharing the progress of the builds with them.

They are TWO of my fave Mk1 models and I am very pleased with how they have turned out.

RALEIGH MK1 SUPER TUFF BURNER.

RALEIGH MK1 ULTRA BURNER

Both bikes are going to be ridden, hence the shiney sides on the Ultra and the Used chainring on the SUper Tuff.

I'd like to keep them both... but they will be with their new owners sometime in February.

The Ultra is wearing the NOS decals I stumbled across... see the guide marks for applying them.

Hope you guys like.

HUGE Thanks to buttsbikeshop in particular for all his help with chroming and anodising and to FHMReader for the Powder Coating and anyone else who I managed to get bits off for these builds.

Oh and jtsmooth for the wheel building...  :daumenhoch:

There is another bike for someone else thats almost complete and should be finished over the weekend... and she's another beauty.  :daumenhoch:

Whilst I can honestly say that I don't like burners at all  :) I do have an eye for a nice build and you have done an absolutely beautiful job on these  :4_17_5:

They just look like they came straight out of the Raleigh catalog my mate keith had when we were kids... top work.

Stunning builds there Dave, well done mate :daumenhoch:

Burners are just so underrated in my opinion - the affordable bike for the masses back in the 80's :coolsmiley:

I mean, is there anyone on RAD that has never owned a Burner, I doubt it  :daumenhoch:

Ok, maybe the geometry was all wrong, but they still looked good, well most of them  :LolLolLolLol:

not guilty - only ever had a 1982 Silverfox which I put some non-year correct bits on
but did own a few of raleigh's finest creations - a mk1 and mk2 chopper and my first bike was a purple budgie  :daumenhoch:

That's the one  :smitten: even the right seat - my dad had to look everywhere for one cos most of the ones available were in a kind of turquoise colour with a smooth seat (with chevron pattern on)

You've got me thinking now Ed - when I see my mom n dad this weekend gonna see if I can find some old bike pics in their stash of photos

loved my budgie!

2 cracking builds David , and as always fantastic camera skills too  :4_17_5:

I have to admit I've NEVER  had a Burner myself , although that is about to change this week when hopefully I take delivery  :D
It was a toss up between 2 or 3 models ,always loved a black and gold MK1 Ultra , but I was swayed by what I  consider the definative Burner icon  ;)

See ya at BB2011  :)

My first bike was a Raleigh Grifter and I sstill own one  :smitten:

Yep... I'm afraid your wrong...  ;)

Mk1 Super Tuff Burner....

Mk2 Super Tuff Burner (came with a Black guard)

Maybe your getting the Super Burner mixed up... which DID come with a gold guard.

There are at least half a dozen restored examples on BURNERWORLD.

This is one of the best ones.... Julian Taff's....

Its not a fixation.... Burner collectors like to build factory spec models, they came from the factory with Reflectors  :daumenhoch: on Christmas morning 1982 there it sat under the Christmas Tree with its nice little reflectors...

Yes most of us pulled them off by new year.... but when trying to build a bike that looks like it did in the Raleigh Brochure, them odd little reflectors are all part and parcel.

I've got some wheel reflectors for the Ultra Burner but haven't put them on yet...  :buck2:

OUCH...!! the bars on the Ultra are very very light... Alloy, nice bars but I can understand why they'd give way...

Too right Dave...  :daumenhoch: I know they weigh a tonne and the geometry is shocking... but it was my introduction to BMX and all I ever knew.  :smitten:

Nostalgia trip every time I build a new one, and its been great building these for someone else.  8)
