So I thought I’d show how I do my Araya 7X’s to Pro Class rim, I’ve done it on a couple of my builds because I can never find a set so this is the next best thing as there’s normally a few knocking about on here or ebay.
Skill wise as long as you can use a ruler and a drill that’s about it and I make sure you wear safety gear because you only get one set of eye’s and fingers.
So this is the safety gear I wear and make sure your in the right type of mindset for undertaking an engineering task.

Tool wise I’ve tried to use/buy kit that anyone can get their hands on. I use to run an engineering firm so I’ve got £1000’s worth of measuring tools/drills etc etc in my garage but everyone doesn’t have that. I got the calliper gauges (the cheaper non-digi type) and hammer from wilko today, the protractor I’ve had from school!!!, the other bits are just general tools......I’ve used a nail instead of a punch because well some people ain’t got a punch. Oh and the drill bit I used was a 9mm which is the nearest size I could find in my tool box!

I use two drill sizes one to make the pilot hole and one to drill the finish hole
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010025-2.jpg)
Clamp the rim in a vice or work bench
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010027-1.jpg)
Measure the centre section of the rim....do not measure from the outside because some rims are buckled and not true and this will give you a false measurement.
Half the overall measurement to get your centre line
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010033-1.jpg)
Next measure between the spoke holes. PLEASE NOTE keep checking this becuase this can hit and miss a bit........Be warned!!! Measure from both holes and get your centre point
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010039.jpg)
Use the nail as a punch to put a “mark†in the rim and hit it ONCE with the hammer !!
Drill the pilot hole.....and try and keep the drill central and also your drilling into a thin wall of aluminium so just use the weight of the drill and don’t push too hard
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010041.jpg)
Go all the way round
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010050.jpg)
Next drill the big hole with a 9mm bit....again try and keep the drill central and also your drilling into a thin wall of aluminium so just use the weight of the drill and don’t push too hard
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a253/the1carper/P1010045.jpg)
And go all the way round

After you’ve finished you will have some metal burrs’s these can be removed with either a bit of wet and dry paper or a de-burring bit or a larger drill bit.
If this is too hard you could pay me £15 per rim to do it :daumenhoch:

Informative and amusing :4_17_5:
I like the way you used household items, nice one dude :daumenhoch:

i always thought that thats what pro-class were anyhow, drilled out 7X's... :D
-
They did use araya rims at one time.
-
The early Pro-Class rims were Araya 7x's drilled. I have a set somewhere and you can see the Araya stamping either side of the hole.

Great work :daumenhoch:

weren't some pro-class rims made by sumo?
-
weren't some pro-class rims made by sumo?
Yep, I believe so Andy :daumenhoch:
I had a Sumo 7X rim lying about for ages looking for an orphan ProClass to do exactly this to, but sold the Sumo as Greg needed it. Less than a week after I'd dropped it off Phil Sawzall had an orphan Pro-Class for sale........... :idiot2:
