Cheers Damon - awesome pictures dude, love the one on the Vincent Ramp, that was a killer of a ramp and not many other than Pepi could ride it that well - respect mate!
Slightly dissapointed you had a Blue Grifter and wore black Docs though, everyone knows Red Grifters were faster and Ox Blood Docs were harder ;D
Thanks for putting them up mate, much appreciated!
Speak to you soon.

Take care mate - Damon
I quit racing mid nineties and raced mountain bikes for quite a few years just for a change of scenary after the race scene got all political. I've had a bike still all these years but haven't been that into it even though I have a bike shop, but i've recenlty got mini and junior rippers for my kids and we've been going down the track so i've got teh bug again! Great to hear from you mate, have you still got your Ninja Scooter? I've not got my Ninja F1 bike but i've got my lycra suit! Man that guy used to pay us a fortune to do all that crap!
-
watch this i posted up then....................

Couldn't see him in the vid but i sensed Pete Hawkins mincing to the B52's behind a ramp somewhere!!!!.................

Happy days mate, happy days..............
-
Totally top pics Damon - you were totally amazing mate - I was such a twat to get out of it before Chingford as those shots always just blow me away - you, Tony, Jason, etc - I remember them from RAD and looking at them and feeling depressed cos I was out of it (made me go get a skateboard so it wasn't so bad in the end) - also the fact that it became a hot underground sport and meant you guys got free tickets to Delerium etc was even more fooking annoying ha ha
pleased and amazed to see that one of me up there as I actually remember it now but I never kept any of that session - have you got any more of any of us? if so please send to ralph.tribe@hotmail.co.uk so I can prove to my kids that I used to have some mates and be somebody ha ha ha - I'm going to try and dig mine out now....
someone was asking for a picture of Steve's legs - well you're in luck - Steve and his massive legs are in the background on one of the Rom shots
cheers
Ralph

Hey Donkeybambam - yeah that water jump was crazy, Reggie spent so much $$$$ on that track, that water jump alone cost a fortune....we used to jump it backwards, it was way scary. Good times. Who did you ride with? Remeber Keith Winyard, Steve Baldry, Dave Barnsby, etc.
-

to add to the history of the ramp rat - here are some pics from "the Guru" (aka Ralph) - the letter from BMX Action Bike should make you laugh - it's asking "what happened to Ralph Tribe - he was amazing" - the tragic truth is that I wrote it as a bet - lol!... I won the bet!! cheers Ralph (Tribe)

That sport test is great, thanks for posting that up (Ive got the mag somewhere). I must have looked at it a million times cos I had either just got a sport or was about to get one. I even had the same red Checked Vans top already so I was well into the pics of you.
-
keen hell Ralph, forgot how rad you were, those pic. are killer...great to see them again. That x-up in the P-Bowl is well high and the look backs are tasty too.
Ironic #2 BMX Weekly: You had the center spread, Tony had the front cover and neither of you entered the King of The Skateparks comp. That pissed everyone off. :2funny:
Funny - off to Scotland with two strangers...that how we did it back then, it was a safe world. NOT! (Hawkins)
I can totally see you writing a letter to BMXAB...that is so funny. It even reads like you wroye it, for chrissakes.
Guru indeed!

Holy FUG! L'il Damon? How did I miss this? Man, nice pics. Didn't we both ride for Raleigh at some point? :LolLolLolLol:..your group of friends and yourself were so good. Great to see these dude.
-
Nice!!!!Baby King ramp reminds me of the days when your bike was longer than the width if the ramp.Bet we all had a few front wheel misses?
-
Awesome... Damon was amazing! Great pics!
-
These photo's brought back some gooooooooooooood memories. Roms bowl was the best bowl ever for high airs. A really nice smooth entry into the bowl, not like Southsea's drop.
Who remembers the massive bowl at Wickstead Park. Now that was big, with a nice roll in. You had to get 4 feet out before you saw daylight.
-
Awesome pictures!!! love this thread
-
love it mate... used to race at surbiton.many years ago.
it's a go kart track now.
-

Chilly ruled that one - that park was my idea of heaven for 1 week every year when I stayed with my cousin who lived opposite the park

What a great pic, if i only had that to ride for the rest of my riding days I'd be a very happy man.

What a great pic, if i only had that to ride for the rest of my riding days I'd be a very happy man.
Its a memory now, but a bloody great one. Raz round the top and drop straight down the 18ft sides for some air... such a rush :4_17_5: :D
Fookin carpark now - makes me all emotional when I go back there :'(
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Wicksteed+Park&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.852959,39.199219&ie=UTF8&hq=Wicksteed+Park&hnear=&ll=52.38463,-0.709938&spn=0.000747,0.002393&t=h&z=19
( I find that picture weird because I think I'm in it - I remember those two lads sat on bikes either side - the kid at the back I'm sure is my cousin - my mate Andy is just riding down on the right and I'm in front of him - I'm probably deluded but, hey, I'm happy ;) )
-
Anyway...back to the thread!

historically significant pictures, worthy of memories.

Wow. Really enjoyed looking at the BITD photos. Thank you for posting them on Rad for us all to see. :daumenhoch:
-
:daumenhoch: Excellent thread, great photos, wish I had some photos of my own, but never had a camera with us when we were out ramping :-(
Ahh yes, great times that we all probably took for granted back then... Must make me a vert ramp again...
-
Hello everyone, be gentle it's my first post :)
Firstly thanks for the old school pictures! I grew up in the 80s and loved seeing freestyle whenever I could.
One of my friends pointed me to this site with the interview from Campbell. Interesting read. I, like him, have bought a new bike and am about to hit parks again. I can already hear my knees protest! I was never particularly good at the sport, but enjoyed jamming around in parks, airing mini ramps/quarters and shitting myself up on vert.
My vague relevance to this thread is the mention of Sutton and also Nonsuch park. When I used to ride, from the age of 12-17 (I'm 29) those two venues saw a lot of me.
The Vert ramp in collingwood park, sutton was essentially on its last legs when I first began bmx and was soon taken down. I remember watching the guys assemble there what seemed like every single saturday, always a little frightened of them being what seemed like a lot younger! There was also a big concrete hump that countless riders used to hurl over, myself included. Sadly it now has iron benches bolted in front of it to stop kids on their bikes riding it. I pulled my first ever 360 over that thing and also cut a few manuals and nose manuals before trying to transfer them to mini ramp. There is now a few small quarter pipes and small boxes for skateboarders, but I never rode it.
Several occassions I had the pleasure of seeing Mike Mullen on that 3 panel vert. Despite the rickety nature he was always smooth as silk on that thing. not to mention his friends Sid, Paul (meacher) Mark (Bartlet), James (Whit) Gary etc all had rad riding styles. I went to many spots with those guys, from the vertical park that used to be in hayes and harlington, to sk8 and ride bristol. Leigh on sea, romford and finally the playstation park in london. I'm in loose contact with Mike still via Facebook and used to bump into Sid at a local rock club.
On a few occasions we would all go into wallington and ride the mini ramp in beddington park, but ten to the dozen it was always filled to the brim with inline skaters, very few boarders strangely. We also used to go to new malden where there was a hefty vert and two mini ramps joined at a hip. some time later they added a small funbox and some rails. The vert no longer exists sadly. Health and safety for you....
We used to have a small park in Dorchester road, North Cheam but it got burned down by kids and never replaced. After a few council meetings and some help from local youth organisations, they put a mini ramp (borderline midi really - just under vert) in the newly made park next to the then newly finished sainsburys. I still remember cycling through the park on an autumn day and seeing some bloke welding it together in the rain. I had such a rush that a ramp was going to be on my doorstep. I asked him when it would be finished and went home to call my friends. (mobile phones being a non entity then) sure enough the next nice day we all got to work on our tricks on that thing with many a slam. Soon word got about and we saw a lot of action from loads of people. It was around this time I hung out with Stuart Kidd (memory and a lot of bifters could have ruined this), who used to make bar ends and hubs (at his school - mind) and he went in to sell a few under Kidd Stuff industries for a time. I really wonder how he is as he was a real nice guy.
Lastly Nonsuch Park. Site of a ww2 bomb exploding, or so the urban legend goes. Everyone used to ride into this immense dirt bowl and air miles out of the doubles built. Over the years the place has increased in size and a few of my friends still session down there. The trails are huge apparently! It had several nicknames, but the one I fondly remember is 'Devil's Dyke'. I remember a fella down there called John who totally owned the place. He had a killer sense of humour to boot and we had a lot of fun over the course of a few summers. occasionally he would even forgo the dirt and come to the mini ramp in North Cheam with me and me mates Chris and Mark.
Sorry to blather on, just wanted to share some of my fond memories from my childhood and hope that some of you guys have some memories of these places too. Perhaps they may go further back, I never knew that surbiton racetrack used to be a bmx track!
anyway take care guys.
-
Fantastic pics from my childhood.
Thanks.

You were the guys we looked up too and wanted to be bitd :daumenhoch:
Someone mentioned Chilly somewhere earlier in this thread....I've had the good fortune of meeting him several times since I got back into BMX.....A real top bloke :daumenhoch:

Some great pics there I used to ride chingford ramp a lot was a bit after your pics tho there was a 12' wooden ramp and a 6' metal crashed and burned a few times on both of em. Used to make the trip to rom quite a bit in the holidays too good memories great times. Got a skatepark near me now so the kids get a run out now I get jealous and want my ride back but she's in bits at the mo so as soon as she's finished I'll have untold scooter marks on my bars lol.
