Anyone close to perfecting this effect?? ???
-
best i see is from a northern gimp on this site .. cant name him as its all top secret... aint it leary !!
-
so he is a gimp and his name is lee. so many choices it's scarey
-
what does this effect look like?
is it like "smoked chrome" ?
-
It's like a smoked pain over chrome which you can scratch off with your finger nail
-
It's like a smoked pain over chrome which you can scratch off with your finger nail
Smoked pain ?
-
if i had a diamond back frame i would have a go at doing it myself.
-
I mean Paint
-
OK like many others I bought a DB Turbo lite with the View to doing it up but asking around no one seems to know a company that can do !! there is lots of talk about Electro plating etc.. and types of paint and smoke chrome lacour etc...
pros and cons to most of them lacour peels off quite easy, Paint never gonna get the right effect
However......
How ever I think I have found a solution
http://www.fhlambert.com/services/nickel_black.htm
the Black Nickel is an Electrolytic colouring process which gives it a BLuish Black Chrome finish I am gonna speak to this lot first thing on Monday to see how I get on this bunch do all sorts so I think they would have no probs doing a F&F
I have a meeting in Watford on Wednesday so I will take the F&F to them see what they got to say !!
I will post a review once I have spoken to them, if they are any good I will let you know and tell them should it go OK to expect a few more calls from here !
Ta for now :LolLolLolLol:
-
Firstly, I've never seen such a clean platers workshop before
Secondly, I guess this is the finish you're talking about - look at the black nickle trumpet, it's a thing of beauty :smitten:
http://www.fhlambert.com/mi/gallery.htm
-
Wow, that looks fantastic :daumenhoch:
-
That's the stuff - bring it on :smitten:
-
All I can say is .....
THis one time at band camp !!!!
Bring it on if they are as good as they look boyz we found our savour !!!!
:4_17_5:
-
will this electrolytic colouring process allow you too mask off the rear turbo dropouts & turbo crank plates?
-
Thanks for the help fellas! The black looks very black but that's the closest I've ever seen!
-
nice one mate lookslike me boys turbolite could turn up there aswell lol
and may show the twat who ruined my bike this is how you do a chrome job lol
-
OK Chaps the answer you have all been waiting for I went to there offices today more like a Bank Security Centre the work areas were absolutely Mint I saw them in action doing the Instruments looks metal the colour was amazing.
The MD was very nice and polite and gave me the best advise, the good news is it can be done :daumenhoch: the bads new not by this firm :'( the reason being is there tanks are not large enough to hold a frame of 36" +
However they have put me in touch with the UK Institute of Metal Finishers of which I have now spoken to them and advised them of our problem, he has assured me there are people who can do this work for us in the UK and is going to get me the relevant details
I explained that there are very keen enthusiasts who are after this solution for both new bikes and old bike restorations he has promised to get back to me tomorrow after lunch so watch this space !!!! :4_17_5:
Once again the solution is out there and nearly in our grasp, I will update you all tomorrow :LolLolLolLol:
-
Nice one... Keep up th good work Sherlock :daumenhoch:
-
Right Chaps nearly there I have today received a couple fo responses one goes as followes
Hi Russell
I have been copied your enqiry We do market a product called Trichrome Smoke. This is a trivalent chrome applied ontop of bright nickel to achieve the Smoke appearance It is not as dark as black nickel but still quite an attractive finish Please let me know if you want any further info
Regards
Bill Jones
:LolLolLolLol:
I spoke to him briefly this evening and he is gonna send me some pictures so we can see the quality and colour also to discuss costs, how many people poss might want this doing numbers please and I will let you know on the costs early next week
We will get there evenutally :daumenhoch:
-

Russell
-
how much dose it cost
-
im based just south of coventry - pk radman had a guy that i thought had this paint job sorted - lee got some bars painted for a turbolite i used to own and they were the dogs natts :4_17_5:
-
how much dose it cost
Waiting to find that out but wont to be sure we get the best deal if we know sort of volumes and numbers of people interested in theory we should get it cheaper. but I will ask for both single and mutliple quotes and see how we go
The one company I quoted earlier are poss in te process of doing some work on this triple chrome for Bently Cars so they must be good but also lets hope the prices are affordable !!! but I will let you once I have seen the pics and shown a few of you,
Danny this firm is based in the Midlands so I might take a trip up there b4 I finish for the year, saying that that only gives me 3 days next week !!! DOH !
will KIT and let you all know :LolLolLolLol:
-
top work mate :daumenhoch:
-
Chaps still no reply as yet I am off for a week or two to the sunny Middle East so this will have to wait for a while a new year a new restore bike hopefully !!!
I will be in touch I do have access to emails so I will let you know should anything come through
Have a gooden speak soon ;D
-
Anyone closer to any answers??
-
like, can the drops be masked?
-
like, can the drops be masked?
Yeah he dodged that question... :-\
-
Still investigating but has been a little at manic at work so I have not had any real time to make the calls required ! my neighbour who is also a sprayer is gonna have a look so I will keep searching but is gonna take some time
:LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
-
Please do, really need to nail this one!! :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
-
Had a slight break through today...
...I'll keep you all posted! :daumenhoch:
-
Come on, come on, I have GT F+F awaiting the treatment. I have put it to one side especially. :LolLolLolLol:
BTW, do I need to get the f+f rechromed 1st, or is that part of the process?
AD :daumenhoch:
-
I thought i had a break through yesterday.. but not good enough :(
-
I think yu will need a good chrome underneith and no, it would be a separate thing. This smoke effect though is mentioned in the same breath as 'bright nickel' although my leary is deffo chrome underneith... the plot thickens
-
Chaps let me know of any news nad I will be happy to run it past the IMF they have been quite good and are tryingto find someone with a big enough tank but no joy as yet !! come on chaps what is the poss break through then PM me and let me know PLEEEEEESE
:LolLolLolLol:
-
Cant believe you fella,s are still looking for the leary paint finish .???? FFS !!!!!!!! :LolLolLolLol:
cmon pull ya fingers out :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'm persistant if nothing else.
I think I've fount the company who developed the effect, based in the US but very close to me. I now have the name for the guy who is product manager for this effect and will call him today to source a place who can do this.
I'll post soon... or you could just spray it :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'll post soon... or you could just spray it :LolLolLolLol:
Never !! :2gunsfiring_v1:
-
I'll post soon... or you could just spray it :LolLolLolLol:
Never !! :2gunsfiring_v1:
Ditto not worth it unless your going to get it done properly !! I am on the edge of my seat
-
mmmm....interesting...
Spoke to the fella and he said it ain't 'tricolor smoke' on the turbo which we thought it could be cos it wasn't invented until the late 80's - too late for this era.
He explained that loads of finishers went out of business in the 90's as trade was moved to cheaper countries and so some of these finishes possibly don't exist any longer. He was very interested though and has asked me to forward any pics to him so he could decipher what it is. I have a few but if you have any good shots of the original finish that show the blue tint send em me quick and he will hopefully tell us what it is.
Cheers
-
Oh and it would be expensive. You would need to strip the frame, polish it, nickel coat it, polish it again, nickel coat it, polish it again!! then mince around with a nickel base and lacquer layers!!
Where's that spray can!

heres some more coating details http://www.macdermid.com/industrial/specialtycoatings.html
Tried em - here's the email reply...
'Sorry this finish does not come from MacDermid'
Now have the 'Surface Engineering Association' on the case!!
-
Here is the reply i got:
Andy, the finish you talk about is a clear electrophoretic lacquer which is then dyed. It is usually coated over nickel plate. The equipment for doing so, is expensive and not practical to do your self. You could try Merridale Polishing and Plating (0121 556 3636) or Ashton and Moore(0121 236 6234) they both have the lacquer but not the dye. They may ask you to pay for the dye which also could be quite expensive.

If we ever find the solution it will be ammazing and no doubt there will be a few people after it ! I would love it for my NS ride ! the prob I was told many times was the size of the bucket in which they plate it in !
WE will get there and I am not gonna spray it black although I have been tempted to do it met blk / pearlescent but I just cant bring me self to do it
Lets keep hunting I cant believe all the metal finshes and associations cant find a co that can do this in the Uk
:LolLolLolLol:
-
they do a smoke colour in this stuff, but I dont think its available in the uk ;)
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metalcast.html
-
If we get enough frames, it might be worth them doing.
Look chaps, all these companies are based in brum by me (home of this kind of industry) so if you need me to visit I can
I'll do some more calls today
-
This is tougher than I expected.
I contacted the Surface Engineering Society who suggested it could well be an early form of 'clear' powder coating as these gave the appearance of lacquers. They in turn suggested I contacted the British Coatings Federation which I did. They think the finish is liquid. Powder coatings in 1983 in the USA were in there infancy and most "fancy finishes" on bikes were liquid, the fact that the finish on this bike scratches off easily bears this out as well.
Other than the above they were not sure that they could help, and suggested I visit a car body shop to get a match to it although the cost may well be prohibitive.
Looks like it may be down to a local paint shop lads!
-
Carl it certainly sounds that way.
Get your frame chromed and get it blown over with some glass paint stylee spray.
Stidds had it right all along with his Pro Class.
-
i work in a body/paint shop and am working on the colour at the moment,i spoke to a paint rep who said he will get his paint colourist to have a look,he stocks a lacquer which is used for polished alloy,he thinks this can be tinted and has good adhesion to shiney surfaces, when i am on holiday next i will pop over and have a chat with them, only problem is my frame only has a tiny bit of the coating left so i hope they can match it from what i have ;)

What about the pro-class brown tint?
-
cool, who does that and do they do a blue version?
-
i reckon just speak to PKRADMAN - he knows the fella to do this :daumenhoch:
-

I been there and asked he said dont know ! I had to ask ! bearing in mind his DB collection and repos of bits and bobs had a few £ out of me on those already trying to get it back to 83 gem it needs to be

Thank you very much :daumenhoch:, glad to see somebody is paying attention, although the way I did mine was not a glass paint spray but a tinted lacquer, just like Sawzall is looking into. The lacquer I used has a brown tint in it just like the original Pro Class. It looks as though I am years ahead of everyone when it comes to colour restoring!! :LolLolLolLol:
If you look carefully at the picture of my Pro Class, you can see the brown tint (you can see it best on the down tube, with the Pro Class decal on).

Stidds I think you are poss spot on but I thought having rad through a number of the posts that it is not as durable as the orig stuff hence the seaqrch, but I do agree firstly it does look cool secondly I may have to go down that route, where did you get the lacour from anyhoow is it in a can or liquid format and need a sprayer to do and dry it out ? PM me with details if you would not mind
Russell
-
why dont you fella,s buy a leary turbo with virtually all the original smoke finish on like me !
problem solved :LolLolLolLol: :coolsmiley:
Danny
-
I am off to my powder coaters during the week to get a profile cruiser coated black. The last time i was down there was just before xmas and he had a candy black coating in which looked very like the leary black but with no hint of brown in it.
Im getting the cruiser done in this colour so will post a pick as I think it will be as close as you will get to black chrome.
-
db's have a hint of blue
mongoose is brown
and let us know of the out come
-
yeah ya right about the hints of brown and blue!! I had a cw cruiser done in the purple candy in about 1994 and it looked like it was candy over chrome so the black should look realy good. Only prob is the powder coating bloke is bit hit and miss.
One frame could look the dogs nads and another as rough as a badgers arse.
He has nackered a few scooter bits before being too ruff with the blaster so you have to tell him its for a show bike or he just doesnt take care.
I will get it back in a week so will pu it on the site.
-
chaps this evening I was sitting down in front of a PC with my neighbour who is a painter sprayer who done a couple of good jobs for me, what he has said if anyone has a small flec of the original stuff he will take it to the big boys and see if he can do a match, alternatively if anyone can get hole of the paint or lacour numbers they could do it from there if anyone is in contact with DB ! just another source I am exploring but I am not going powder coat these gems !
I have given him some of the pics off here and pics od DannyS collection to see what the pros think ! as I say if we can get a sample we maybe in a better position ! unfortunately mine had been completely stripped so no chane on mine PM me if anyone can help !
:LolLolLolLol:
-
I have an original finish F&F on their way from the states as we speak will let you know when it lands unless someone can help now :daumenhoch:
-
I've tried removing a sliver or two from the good coating left on my frame set. The trouble is it just powders away. It doesn't chip, or come away easily. It just turns to dust. :(
-
If I see danny Silverstreak's turbo some time soon i'll take a blunt spoon to it and get a chunk of the finish, he won't mind :daumenhoch: :LolLolLolLol:

I may be on to something and am intending to have a little test, then will post results and how done!!!
-
test away! :daumenhoch:
Does thid test involve Airfix paint, Flour some tin foil and a roll of selotape? cos if it does I've tried that! :buck2:
-
yawn :LolLolLolLol: :coolsmiley:
-
What a great read, you boys have been busy! Had a knot in my stomach as I was reading thinking the quest for the grail was almost at an end!
I too have a Leary Turbo needing some TLC. I think we might have another problem though: frame and fork decals! Been searching for some time and have had no luck. Also original padsets...
I will try some paint finishers north of the border and see what I can turn up, keep you posted.
-
i am off work next week,so i will go and see our paint rep about paint for the frames, only problem is i only have a tiny piece as a patern,i will keep you posted when i know something :daumenhoch:
-
good work fellas .. i know i spoke to sandy once and he told me that the japs mastered this finish and it took em about 6 attempts to get it to sandy`s like`in ..

Nowhere near, but she can spray it anyway if she looks like that!!
-
Has anybody got any update regarding finding someone who can black chrome a HLT
-
I have just sent my forks to Superbike Dan to see if he can match and replicate the finish in powder. I will let you all know what he says.
-
Scary's HLT looks pukka in special paint finish ;)

Radman's come the closest yet - he sorted mine and it seriously looks the biz
