Title: 2 Rare British race frames :)
Post by: skki3330 on August 10, 2012, 10:52 PM
Well im a very happy boy today had a great day on the coast with the family and then come home to this package.
These are Hustler Pro Race frames built im being told Neil Hargreaves and were only sold via American connection bmx center on Stockport Road, Altrincham. this shop was run by the mother of a local racer from Wythenshawe called Simon Wright. Simon's uncle was Neil Hargreaves. A big thanx to everyone who has given me info on these  :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
Both frames seem to have there differences i suppose due to the fact the were hand made but possibly because they were built for diff riders??? im only thinking this because the person i got them from found them in a unit that was being knocked down. there was also a Hustler Freestyler which i missed out on and they guy found a load of pictures to but cant find them  :(, i nearly cried when he told me that he had left a couple of other frames there that looked damaged and aload of forks.
Are i nearly forgot these were based on the Hutch race frame.

Now there are a very rare beast i cannot find any others so if anyone can give me more info id be very happy

arent they just hutch stickered as hustler?? they look like they are welded and not brazed to me,all the british bikes i know are brazed.maybe these are a result of the profile/hutch fall out and are indeed hutch frames that profile sent out the back door??either that or im talking shoite ;D

Here is the research piece of history from bitd that I pulled from my cache of stuff. Bitd when I broke my MRD I decided 2 replace it with the freestyle frame or the race frame , which ever my parents came up with 4 my birthday. As things turned out I had something else  ::) I repaired the MRD and rode on tho  8) This is why it was ripped from the Mag and given 2 my parents and why it survived  ;)

This thread is the bollox cos this is an amazing piece of British history. We really need 2 find more info on these frames  ??? They r defo Brit built u can tell from all the welding and the race frame has some vey subtle diffrerences from it America cousin . Would kill for that freestyle frame, shame about the forks  :(

Looks like they did other stuff that lends itself 2 other makes  ::)

Could those freestyle forks be something like the Aero Reflex forks?
Hard to tell from the ad but the blades look similar. I think they were made with Reynolds tubes as well.
Awesome finds btw. Loving this thread :Great_Britain: 8)

I think I have a mag with a Test on these :daumenhoch:

The test was in an issue of UK mag Freestyle BMX and the rider was my old friend Justin Pidcock. The geometry on the Hustler Freestyler was based on the Haro Freestyler and originally had triangular gussets at the headtube. Justin broke a few of these testing them so Neil introduced the tube where the gusset was. The Hustler race frames were based on Hutch frames as Simon Wright and his friend Neil Trevor were used to riding Hutch Pro Racers and the geometry suited them. American Connection shifted a fair few of these frames back in the day so I'm surprised there are not more of them around. Talk to Bruce (haro-os-boy) on here as like myself he used to spend a hell of a lot of time at American Connection BMX Centre.

They also made donut seat clamps based on the hutch style too as well as layback seatposts and Powerdiscs. I still run my Hustler Powerdisc and Hustler Seat clamp on my TA to this day.

.... and they were deffo TIG welded cos I was there bitd when Neil was prototyping the framesets  :daumenhoch:

I think Neil Hargreaves has bought the old Essoldo Theatre on the corner of Edge Lane, Stretford, Manchester with plans to turn it into another Roller Skating Rink by all accounts. Renovation has seemed to be going on for years.

.. oh and for your info the decals on your Hustler Race Frames are the earlier ones... the later were done in the same style as on the Hustler Freestyler shown. The later decals were only ever done in blue as shown no matter what colour frame they came on... which for me was a bad idea as you could barely see them on the darker frame colours. Fro memory the frames came in chrome, white, red, orange and a really bad dark green.. almost a military dark green... which bitd was just not bright enough  ;D The article in the Freestyle BMX mag shows the colours so you will see what I mean  :LolLolLolLol:

Cheers

John

Ok a lil bit of and update so i spent some time and sent some emails trying to track down Neil Hargeaves just so i could get some more info on these great frames, well im at work today and my mobile rings and who was on the end of the line YEP Mr Neil Hargreaves  :D Well he seems to be a very busy man with his new business but he gave about 5mins of his time.
I found out that the place where these frames were found was a unit where all the bikes where kept inc all the race team stuff and he said that he got most of the stuff out before the owner of the unit looked up and would not let them back in to get the rest of there stuff, so it seems that door was locked and never opened until it was knocked down.
I asked him about the two frames i have and questioned him on why are they slighty diff in length? so he made 2 versions a Pro Race and a Expert Race.
They originaly come with Tange forks.
They were built much like Hutch frames due to some of the guys who raced for he's team like riding Hutch BMX's
He has still got aload team stuff etc which he quickly told me is not for sale  :( so i asked if he could give me any info, scans of pictures, photo's of the stuff he had. He said that he's a very busy but he has my number and he wont forget me  :daumenhoch:

He finally told me that he has been watching all the BMXing recently and he has been asked to start a team and maybe build bikes again, i must say i could here the excitment in his voice  8)

Well if he contacts again ill keep you all up to date
