Well the Challenger build has ground to a stop as I can't find either of the 2 seats Id be happy to run on it. :( To ease the paid I decided to get stuck into this project. Ive always loved the early TNT's, and have a soft spot for the Hwa Fong Daddy as it was always one of those bikes that was equally at home on the trails and the track. I had been stashing away parts for the time a F+F turned up, and when Neil on here told me he was selling his I jumped at the chance to have it, as well as a nice set of wheels with original 90's Derringer hubs.
The F+F are in pretty good shape. The paint job is really bad but I planned on painting it Yellow (all TNT's look best in Yellow :LolLolLolLol:) so Im actually glad it is a rubbish job as I woudnt want to change it if it was original paint. It also has a small dent in one of the chainstays but I will get that sorted when it goes to Dan. :daumenhoch:
When the wheels arrived I was really happy, but a few weeks later when I went to fit the tyres to the wheels I noticed the rear axle was a hack job (Dont think this was Neils handy work :daumenhoch:) with someone replacing the rear axle with an unsealed item that was too thin for the bearings. This meant the rear hub had loads of play, so I had to try find a replacement. After trying all the usual places I had no luck so sent a mail direct to TNT. Turns out they still sell replacement axle kits for the early hubs, so before long this turned up.
The best part is that it came with the OG style axle nuts, so now the front and rear wheels are an exact match. :smitten:

Ive also fitted some rainbow comp III tyres that I picked up at MK. I need to dig out the bits and pieces I have been putting away for this, as well as start drawing up the decals. Will probably get the bike off to Dan in the next few weeks as well.
If anyone has a set of TNT bars (92-96) please let me know. They are the last bit I am missing. :D
Will update as things progress. :daumenhoch:

nice bike sir.

I stripped back the ratty paint on the chainstay to get a better look at the chain stay rash. Luckily its not bad at all with only shallow dents and bit of scratching. Its going off to Phil on Monday to have these sorted out, and then its heading to Dan for TNT yellow powder. Looking inside the seat tube it appears the frame was originally red, but I always loved Yellow TNT's so am going down that route.

Well the bike was supposed to go off to Phil last week but work got in the way so its still sitting here. :LolLolLolLol: Will try send it off this week.
On the plus side I managed to get hold of these lovely 94 TNT Bars. They were NOS before being fitted to a show bike so are in lovely condition. (pics supplied by seller). They should be with me shortly.

Are you sure that is the same frame in the mag? The frame Jon owns has an unusual brake hanger on the seat stay. It's a flat piece of metal that's bent in to shape to hold the cable. It's the only frame I have seen like this. All the others have a tubular hanger that arches from one side to the other.
I believe it's a 'transition' frame, between the 94 calliper frame and the tubular hanger design. The later frames went on to brakes at the chain stay and 1 1/8".
Super cool frame, either way :daumenhoch:

Yes you are right. This frame is a transition frame which is basically a MK1 HFD with canti mounts welded on to it. The batch after mine is the one featured in the mag which have different SS bridges, and cable hangers. They did a 3rd version of 1" HFD's that also had a Standard Byke Co style gusset added to the head tube as well. All were simply sold as regular 1" HFD's in their press and catalogues, and all featured the same decals. Even the 1" clamp on fork version was marketed as the same bike. I think the first model change they talk about is the 1 1/8th version which had the "karate man" decals on, and was considered a "new" version.
I like the fact they constantly made changes to the bikes with every production run. It makes the brand and the bikes a lot more interesting. :daumenhoch:
-
Bars arrived yesterday and Im really pleased with them. Mint condition and uncut. :smitten: They are however HEAVY! Honestly feels like they are made out of pig iron. :LolLolLolLol:
Will hopefully get the frame back from paint next week and can start build up.

-
Amazing,do you know if that the same yellow as the old s&ms?looking foward to seeing this built :)
Thanks. Im not sure if it is the same as S&M yellow. TNT used 3 different yellows in the early days, ranging from a light yellow similar to the EF GT performer, all the way through to a darker yellow that I have used (RAL1021). I suspect this is very close to the yellow used on the later Challengers but am not sure.

Ive been chipping away at the build. Still need a few bits to sort it but will get them in the next week or so. Here is the bike as it stands for now.

This is looking great

Love these mid TNTs :daumenhoch:
-
I have been busy trying to finish this up for MK. While browsing through an old plus mag I spotted the pricing for the 95 Hwa Fong Daddy. I didnt realise it was the most expensive bike TNT made that year. :uglystupid2:
I also managed to get a nice survivor TNT retroblade to replace the Profile chainwheel.
As well as a nice set of Shimano XT cantilevers.
Few more bits to sort but its on track to be ready. :daumenhoch:
