That should come up well with a bit of elbow grease, unfortunately it's usually ignorance of basic mechanical techniques that cause problems like that  :(

a former owner of this stem must have been ignorant to the 'unscrew the stem bolt a bit and give it gently tap' way of removing a stem

STOP.... HAMMER TIME!

What I thought too Steve  ;) , well worth taking the time to get right . Alloy weld/filled then re-shape to OG angles where needed .

Was this a grind away to non dented depth or was any make up used?
No smart comments about foundation or eye liner that obviously was worn during the resto.

It depends on the machining / polishing methods used IMHO ... here's a brushed stem I did last year. No before pix I'm afraid but it was well beaten

steve's resto work is faultless, but have to say, neils is also coming on strong..

proper passion for it, and a good way to fund your habit, buying stuff fooked, doing it up, having a fiddle, and the selling/trading it into more and/ or better stuff and doing it over again.

sensible really.

i would much rather be know as a good restorer than a theif or trouble maker

Well youre entiled to youre opinion JT

As for the £500 stem one eBay, yeah I put the price on it based on the last one I saw that was NOs and of the deep H variety that sold on eBay for £425. So not that far out huh. Wouldnt be the first to but something rare on eBay for a 'high' price in the off chance it will sell.

Why have I given Neil shit for what he does. I posted compliments to SteveP's amazing work on the his Hutch stems cos that the way it should be done IMHO. Credit where credits due huh. If you wanna know my thoughts on Neils stem i think it sucks! But hey I didnt post that so guess i'm wrong for that to. Fact is restoring a Hutch stem isnt easy. Tried it my self and been very disappointed with the results to. Rounded corners just dont cut it on a Hutch stem. The square edges are part of the design and should be kept as should the detailing whethr it be a deep H or Western H. Yes Neil's stem is better than it was before, but it aint right.

As for comments JT, c'mon you like a snipe here and there. I'm know more a bully than you. Be honest fella. You may have been quiet on the sniping front recently, maybe thans down to becoming a parent again. Have heard it changes a man?

Embarressed? Me? No. Its an open forum. Dont post anything if you cant take cristism. Especially threads that are looking for a response from its readers.

Hypocrite? Me? No. Well no more than you and the next person anyway.

Regardless of this BS, once again Neil you've taken something that was worthy of the dustbin and turned it into something that looks lovely, polished or not, annod or not, however you look at it, its a major achievement from how it started and as far as i'm concerned its another a top job.

Same for Steve's work, perhaps that stem wasn't in a state of Neil's, but again it's an amazing resto. Both restorers need praise as both of your stems look great.

Well done lads  :daumenhoch:

£500 is alot for a stem     what about earning money from the community...thought it wasnt allowed!  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

stick to SR stems they are cheaper and keep  the sly comments and remarks to yourselves. Best for the community. :) :)

:LolLolLolLol:   I think there is a huge difference between getting the true value for an item and making money from the community as you put it.

If I was that desperate to make money on the Hutch stem i wouldnt have had it sat in the box for 12 years. It says £32 on the header card. I it were your stem would you be selling it for £32 or what ever you bought it for years ago? I doubt it.

James/Donkey, you have just come across as an Ass! You stick to you're SR stems, maybe polish them up an punt them out for the true value, thats great. But there are people out there buying genuine NOS Hutch frame sets and maybe a polished SR stem wont do for that build. What do yo think? Those people could wait for the Repop Hutch stems to come out though, but maybe the repops arent good enough?

For the record i really liked Neils GHP, the colour was great, a nicely balanced build. It was a shame it had new school GHP type Star Bars on it though. Would have like to see SR beartrap pedals on it to and I can understand neil giving the Oakley 'O' Wing grips a miss at the price they go for, guess the same could be said for the star bars  ???.

But hey i'm a purist and think that things should be right before finishing showing off a build. I also think at some of the prices that get put on restored bikes they should have the correct parts and those that price demands. Thats across the board!

Theres also  a fine line as to whether or not something is restoreable if you want to just punt it out at the other end.

its about common decency.

systematic rubbishing of someone just isnt on.

the fact its being denied makes it worse.

what neils reasons for doing stuff are, are down to him.

if poeple dont like it, then fair dinkum, free country, but to consistently try and put the man down, bitching about him doing stuff for money, weeks after trying to flog a fooking stem for a monkey is just bullshit.

i respect JJ, we dont see eye to eye on stuff, but hey, you cant please all the people all of the time.

but there is no need for the backdoor bullyingh thats going on.

it happened to munners, who love him or loathe him, got the same treatment, and ended up leaving..some say good ridance.

i can see this going the same way, and thats just fooking sad.

If I chip in, I explain why:

Didn’t like the Senior pro turning into a Turbo, or polishing  dropouts wafer thin to rid them of washer marks.

what is the big deal with this fookin stem ? neil took what was a pretty shagged stem and re-finished it the way that he wanted to , if he chooses to polish his tackle then surely it is his business  :idiot2: i agree with some of the comments regarding his resto work and yes , the stem could have been repaired by welding and filling the dents with alloy to restore it to a more original finish but at the end of the day this is neils choice surely . i do feel that he is getting a bit of a raw deal from certain members which i think is unfair .

it always amazes me that he can turn around his projects so fast ( mine seem to take forever ) but this just shows what passion he has for his hobby . if we all built our bikes to original spec then they would all look the same , where's the fun in that ? dont get me wrong , i love to see a factory spec bike which is perfect down to the last detail but some of the parts are difficult or impossible to find .

i say keep doing what you want neil , build them the way you want them as at the end of the day it is all down to personal choice what parts and what finish / colour you use .

love him or loathe him , he certainly has a passion for bmx and that's what is important . i met him briefly at mk and he seems to be a nice guy , though i never saw his ball sack and think my life will be richer for that !

i feel sure Neil did it this way, because he wanted it this way. He no doubt knows the square edges could be achieved with wet and dry on a flat plate, sanding the stem back and forth. I'm in the middle of doing an old DK stem. The edges are so sharp you could shave with it!!

Ffs elvis i might not be as active as i once was but you’re not the first to polish bmx parts. My parents have a old lighting business so ive sent many hours on a machine polisher.
I was using translucent powercoat 5years ago, ive done bikes in all colours, replacing crossbars, dyeing and recovering seats.. getting shit for posting a “how to de-anodize” picture thread without the correct gloves. I even won os-bmx bike of the year in 2004.
I only gave my honest opinion, sorry for not sucking your c0ck like the rest.

Some with think it's a rescued stem, other will think it's ruined. If you post something on an open forum then you must be prepared for differing opinions to yours - If you don't like criticism, don't leave yourself open to it (ie don't post it).

Think your mistaking bullying with an opinion..
If I chip in, I explain why:
I didn’t like this stem because I don’t agree with grinding quarter inch off.
Didn’t like the Senior pro turning into a Turbo, or polishing  dropouts wafer thin to rid them of washer marks.

Also sick of seeing endless pics of polishing mops  :LolLolLolLol:

1/4 of inch there would have been no stem left . and drop outs wafer thin i weld my sunna  and finaly just for the record what resto work have you done to show us ?

by the way mister scary leary can you tell me and probaly many others what method you would have used on the stem  please

The correct method would be to alloy weld fill and machine back.. by a "professional"

THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT THE FOOKING STEM, SO STOP PRETENDING IT IS.

FFS.

hide behind purism all you want, i think the root of this has been dragged clearly to the surface, and hopefully, once it dies down, will reflect positvely on us moving forward?

or not...

its like old ravers, sitting in the corner, moaning like it aint how it used to be..

know what i mean?

Does he fook.. he loves all the attention and all the money his quick builds bring..
One mintue its his childhood dream build the next its on ebay, one minute its on the wall (while he take an attention photo).. the next its stripped n sold.

He even says "who wants first dib dobs before ebay" when its already been listed and retracted from fookin ebay!

Please don't pm me again calling me out.

Its not like its a historical artifact thats been defaced by vandals, its an old BMX stem that was banged up to fook and now its nice and shiny.

i guess neil will never win, he's right.
some people go down the purist route, with the brushed look. some dont.
some parts are too far gone to even remain in a survivor state....in some peoples minds.

i tend to look at items like neils stem and think, 'f'uck it the geezer has had a go at keeping this bitof history alive'

i've polished stems till my fingers bled....ive stripped em.... ive left them be...just depends on the mood or the build

ended up being this
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v255/rombloke/restoredpro-1.jpg)

i've polished the fook out of hubs and rims

polished the granny out of tuff necks

even ones like neils that were hammered
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v255/rombloke/DSCF0002.jpg)

and ones that wasnt
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v255/rombloke/DSCF0058.jpg)

and left them well alone, survivor style
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v255/rombloke/DSCF0009.jpg)

at the end end of the day, does it really matter....
its all opinions, and we know what theyre like.

neil....they are your bikes and parts...do what the fook you want with em...but if you polish anything, dont expect everyone to like it.
my opinion is, i like a little bit of bling....
