Title: Quadangle Powder Coating
Post by: nobby on April 10, 2021, 01:16 PM
Hi all, Long time lurker, but only my second post in over a decade.

Have had a 1985 Quadangle sat in bits in my attic since buying from a mate almost 25 years ago. My kids have now grown up and finished Uni, so ive decided i now have the time and patience to get it rebuilt.

It was originally Baby Blue, but at some point in its life its been hand sprayed lime green. The green paint is flaking in places and the original paint looks pretty straight. Does anybody have any idea whether its possible to remove the green paint without damaging the original paint ? or would it be easier to just have it powder coated ? Is there anywhere that could match the original colour and what sort of cost are we lookng at ? Ive spoken to a local  ( im in Coventry ) powder coating and plating company who specialise in bike frames and they are quoting ?160 for the frame and forks, and another ?30 if the drop outs need tidying. May even go black if matching the original paintwork isnt and option.

Thanks in advance if anybody can help.

Norm

LOL how much? I know people take the piss with bike coating, but man that is about the most expensive quote I have ever seen.

Get hold of Dan. He charges ?80 without repairs. Powder is about a tenner.

Be great if you could get the green off and expose the blue but you'd have a job on your hands there i recon.  worth a shot though

The hard part is finding a box to pack it in safely also get some pipe insulation for a bit of extra protection cant remember how much postage was but do make sure you insure it with postage looks in good shape dropouts will be fine once blasted and painted

If you live close to a bike shop start there. A frame box is usually enough. My FIT I bought cheap recently was sent in a Federal box. A bike box will generally be far too much just to send a frame and fork in, and because of that size nearly all couriers won't take it.

A frame box on the other hand? you can send that with whoever you like tbh. Just be careful though, because most couriers now won't insure *anything* any more. Not even bikes.

Just make sure you use the pipe lagging method. Also, with the dropouts (both fork and frame) pad the absolute shit out of them or the courier will make sure they stab through the box and get bent to shit. Zip tie the padded fork to the frame, as with it flying around it will dent the crap out of the frame etc.

I've PM'd Dan but had no reply.

Would it be better just emailing PWS ?

Sorry about all the questions gents.

He don't frequent these parts no more.
If you're on farcebook try Daniel Purcell - pws finishing.
If not I guess emailing him's favourite.  :daumenhoch:

Emails best if you don't have Facebook for sure.
I spoke to Dan a few days ago and he has a 6 week backlog. You'll have to get it out to him to get yours in the queue.

Thanks for the heads up gents, i'll try emailing him, but in all honesty i'm not sure i can wait 6 weeks or more.

Big shame as his work looks very very tidy and lots of folk on here speak very highly of him.

Anybody know of any decent powedr coating firms near Coventry, that can do the job properly and dont want ?160

Hi Nobby,

As mentioned SBD is the man, I also need my SE frame done in Baby blue soon.

I personally take my bits to Dan as he's only 45 mins away. (I'm not saying send me your frame but seeing as we both need the same colour it'll be easier for him)

Cheers

How soon were you thinking of dropping your own frame to Dan ?

The reason I ask is that I'm in London from the 21st to the 24th of May. I did think about taking the frame and forks with me as I'll be staying in Whitechapel, so only 25 minutes from PWS.

Does Dan do frame repairs as well, pre paint? i.e. weld/braze fill dents, drop outs etc.?

That would massively speed up something I've been pondering.

Cheers
