Title: Haro Group 1 racebike project.
Post by: Jon The Bassist on December 23, 2009, 09:02 PM
Okay, so I need an OS bike to race, on a fairly tight budget.
I've just got this Haro Group 1 from the bay. These are the before pictures with absolutely nothing done to the bike:

Clean it up, whip the front brake off, tilt the seat up and lower the post, put a plate + numbers on, oil the chain, pump the tires up and set off for racing :daumenhoch:

Nice, what are you going to do with it, re-furb, ride or a complete rebuild  ???

This bike is to be entirely for riding, not a restoration for showing. I might even put non-Haro bits on to improve it as a racebike.

well i'd put a 15T on the back as 41-15 is a sweet gearing set-up, put some better wheels on it for sure and then race it :daumenhoch:

F & F only needs a polish. I doubt I'll use the cranks as they're very short and I used 180s BiTD (175s would probably be okay). I might keep the wheels (with the new school tyres on) for general use/commuting in the dryer months and get some better wheels for racing. I've got some Haro pads on the way also. I really need to ride the thing before I decide exactly what I'm doing with it!

I'd go for 175's  :daumenhoch: and stick with NS tyres if you really wanna rack up points in racing, i noticed with older tyres they dont seem to grip aswell in my opinion :-\ and wheels will be a big advantage aswell!

that'll do nicely eh!

Seatpost looks a bit bent - don't get it jammed in the seat tube - they're a blighter to get out...

Yeah, the seatpost is slightly bent but it dropped into the seattube very easily. I'm not sure I'd want to race with a seat that far back anyway - but would be okay for commuting etc. I used Elina and Uni all-in-ones BiTD set down low.

I've been up to my elbows in Autosol for the last few days :LolLolLolLol:

Big thanks to ACE CYCLES in Harrogate for supplying cheap cables etc and a couple of little freebies :daumenhoch:

I've not managed to straighten the seatpost, so I'll have to see if I'm okay with the seat at it's current height as it won't go any lower.

I got another old bike that I'm using as a donor bike - I'll be nicking the alloy wheels, copy comp 3s, and drivetrain (decent 1 piece cromo 175s, pedals, spider, 44T chainring) from that bike. I might keep the other bike as a rider for the missus.

More pics soon hopefully.

Pads arrived today, so time for a quick update. Original Haro seat put on. Alloy wheels, 175 cromo crank/pedals/spider/44T chainring all added from donor bike. It's now rideable as it is. Tyres are a bit dry and will be replaced with standard cheap black comp 3s soonish. Chain needs another link in, as the rear of the bike is now too short for me. Bars still feel low to me (I'm a 6 footer) so I might need a 1" flex fighter. Probably need a new seatpost but I can manage with what I've got for the moment. Frame is still a bit pitted, and I'm nearly through the chrome in some parts, but it's fine for racing with.

'tis looking faster with every post Jon!  :D

I'm looking forward to seeing it in action - you gonna make it to Lytham or are you getting your rocks off?

Cheers James - shame I'm not looking any faster! I've still not ridden this bike in anger at all, I must get some training done.
No unfortunately I can't do Lytham - I'd nothing at all planned for the original date as well...

Update. Tyres and grips were falling apart so have been replaced by new GT grips and new repro Tioga Comp 3s. I couldn't do anything with the original seatpost (and didn't need that much layback either) so got a new plain seatpost and put the original saddle back on. Chucked on a cheap flexfighter which I might look to upgrade to something more effective later. That's all I'm planning to do for the moment... I'm happy with how it rides, there's plenty of room. I'd change the wheels and cranks if I wanted to make it an out and out speed machine.

Okay, so I wasn't that happy with the cranks (too short and flexy for me), the grips (moving), and the chain was in a state.
So, I got some survivor Profile (Powerlite) 180 cranks from the bay, new sealed bearings, NOS Proneck flexfighter, generic lock-on grips from Halfrauds (had some vouchers), and a new KMC chain, and new 9/16 pedals as the old ones wouldn't fit 3pc:
