GT Pro bars, the very best bars for all in 83/84, Gt was a massive exotic brand in my neighbourhood, and the closest you could get to them were the bars, and your bike was elevated to some new level with Gt bars on it, my Aero Burner got Gt bars on late 85, a hand me down from our kid, and what did he replace them with, yep GT Pro bars, they also look mint to.

They were that good, they built the bars for other brands to  :4_17_5:

Monkey bars by VDC
exotic shape , great size and really nice geometry. The daddy of bars bitd and a real rare item today make for the classic icon of bars

I'm into the Monkey bars too but GT's for sure are a good solid all rounder that lend themselves to a lot of bikes without looking out of place. Versatile and quality.  But a safe option?

Monkey bars could be the thinking mans crumpet.

* Any JMC bars worth a thought?

I never even heard of VDC or monkey bars bitd.  :(

Different areas of the country had they're own prefrences as well so I'm sure we'll have some oddities crop up.

No safe option where Pro Bars are concerned, they were the very best Bars b.i.t.d, i agree monkey bars maybe rare, but they are uglier than a dogs clinkers and not exactly super race either  :daumenhoch:
Title: Re: Ok lets build the Ultimate Old School BMX (As Voted For by RAD Members)
Post by: pickle on January 18, 2010, 01:22 PM
what about the humble CW bars?  from what i remember BITD we all tried em at some point (copies anyway) but i guess for geometry and kudos i would agree with the GT bars.

although for me, my preference would be Ron C bars by MCS  :daumenhoch:

JMC Darrell Young for me i reckon. Not too big and definitely the right shape for racing.

I've never owned GT bars so i can't agree but i've owned JMC's.  :4_17_5:

Hmmmm I love Pro-Class (pro-size chro-mo) bars and I love the GT (pro-size) on my rider but............

Due to my love of building gusset geese it has to be mongoose stainless steel bars  :smitten:

Did you know Monkey Bars were based on CW's? VDC made the design first and thought they were shit. The CW guy saw them dumped on the floor at VDC and asked if he could have them. Produced them and sold heaps. Off the back of the success  VDC made them but with the pierced tubes. Thus, the Monkey Bars....

Got to be CWs...

Everybody I knew back then (who raced) upgraded to either them or copies of them.  I was a lanky scrote even in my teens and cdubs on the fairly short frames I owned were what made them rideable and raceable.  The only bars that really made your bike feel roomier and 'bigger'.

VDC...no-one I knew had them or knew of them.  GT...everyone had heard of but I don't remember many - if any upgrading to them!   Exotic yeh - but not 'the ones' back then... :LolLolLolLol:

GT, who the fook are vdc? some obscure thing out a magazine B.I.T.D to most of us.  CW's were everywhere too but weren't the prettiest. monkey bars with the silly pierced tubing are ugly as pierced eyes

CW's (or copies)

Everyone around my way had them BITD including me.

If the Ultimate OS BMX is about what most kids wanted/used BITD then its CW.

If its about the rarest/most expensive/money no object/only seen in adverts parts then monkey bars.

They were better than my Falcon Pro V bars and they ended up on every frameset I had afterwards!!  :)

So feck off!!  :D

PS.  They were fooking big and they wouldn't clear my seat even with a layback........HUGE!!   :LolLolLolLol:

I think the most common were CW's but I'd say that was on the street, the question should be, would CW's be the 'ultimate' (ie the best) race bar? Probably not.

Skyway pro bars anyone ? ???
Title: Re: Ok lets build the Ultimate Old School BMX (As Voted For by RAD Members)

gt pro bars

Title: Re: Ok lets build the Ultimate Old School BMX (As Voted For by RAD Members)
Post by: Waxintaxin on January 18, 2010, 04:42 PM
GT bars were the same as many many standard type bars , robinson,GT , skyway, all used the same type of design and as such were not the ultimate

I guess its what are we building here a ultimate bike or what everybody had bike.

I was going to say, were not all the other similar bars to GT Pro bars just based on the GT Pro bar. I may be wrong here but were GT Pro bars the original of the similar design's or were they ones that looke similar before the gt ones ?

Although Rich you are onto something there, is this the bars you would want b.i.t.d or are we talking just the best bars ? i may change my GT Pro bars for pro STAR BARS, as they are currently my fav bars

I guess the criteria could be something like (in no paticular order): Usability, Desirability & Aesthetics ???
As a nice balance between the three I'd go for Renthal Bars :daumenhoch:

Too go with the guys on who's voted with GT Pro Bars, i think we should go for that little extra bit of spice and rarity in fiting some GT 'Andy Patterson' Bars, a very rare bar and are not seen alot on builds, very different and look  :smitten:

cw's are the finest bar as long as you ride with your eyes shut...

What I mean by that is they're just the right size but look very strange/ugly compared to most bars...

Although on the skyway street thrashing advert they look perfect

hmmm just contradicted meself there a little :LolLolLolLol:

I wouldn't vote for CW as I snapped a pair of their cruiser bars when gating - not exactly serious abuse!
I had no problem with the size/shape of them though.

4 pages and no mention of Redline's original V bars?

*The* first non standard shape for an engineering reason. Think how many manufacturers like Raliigh, Pirahana at the lower end made v bars to replicate the distinctive shape.

Renthals were later and tbh in my mind, irrertrievably linked to Mongoose, and so fail my test, and CW after that. CW's were everywhere, like spew at a teenage cider party.

V bars, the original bmx shaped bar copied by everyone.....
