Title: My new project TORKER
Post by: crazycraig on February 11, 2010, 09:30 AM
I have just got this torker 280 .Its original one owner from new apart from grips(whats left of them ) pedals and seat . I dont know what to do with it rechrome ,powder or just use it as a dog around rider !!! The chrome is shot to sh!t and rust is very deep in places .
Nevertheless its a torker and i love it already

The puch murray seat will be going though  :-\

What do you think

Nice project for you Craig  :daumenhoch:

Don't reckon the coke/lemon juice and tinfoil are going to make much impression on that    :D

I would get it re chromed if the funds allow otherwise a nice powder job  :daumenhoch:

Good result, I'd give it an OA bath and then get the chrome stripped to see what it's really like underneath.  A custom powder blue would look good, but I think it would look better all in black  ;)

The white Frameset looks great with the chrome forks..unsure of the orig factory colours that came out BITD.
Lovin' the Torker Skipstyler pic as well  :4_17_5:

Leave it as a true survivor original chrome, an acid bath might be an idea may help a liitle.

build it with used parts to factory spec.

Too many survivors get ruined with new paint jobs in my opinion and loose all sense of history.

Nice 280 (X's little brother), looks pretty original, the MX1000's F & R are and addition thought only had a rear 890 plus they did only come in chrome.  Had one from Alan's in 83 but by the time I'd had him upgrade it, it was a 400  :LolLolLolLol:

I know this might sound crazy but after an OA bath or whatever would it not be possible to buff up the bare metal (where the chrome has fallen off) with a polishing wheel?  I know it wouldn't be as shiny as chrome but it would look better than the rust does but would still have a rat-like quality about it. ???

in 1982/3 this was how mine looked a few days after getting it from alans with my dad (he worked for British rail so we bought it back on the train - still unbuilt in the box :D aged 12/13 i bet i was like  ;D all the way back to Derby.)
Changed the tyres for comp 3's but nothing else, Still love Torker's now :smitten:

If painting, i vote for white. Theirs a junior in a strange pale blue in the museum that looks good aswell (reckon they were around in that colour later on as well - the Lunn's or someone like that?)

Keep as survivor...  restore to former glory....  whichever way you turn you'll never please everybody or anybody sometimes!!  For me, it's resto all the way.  I think she'll look sweet brought back 'to life'.  Re-chrome may be tricky, as you say, the rust looks bad and i doubt it would hide any pitting, depends how fussy you are....  a nice white powder coat... well, now you're Torking (forgive the pun!).
Can't wait to see the results whichever way you go.  Good Luck.  8)
