Title: Old School British Champ Update
Post by: Paulo on February 24, 2010, 09:33 PM
You'll remember that Ian Archibald won the Old School Brits last year at Cheddar.

Some of you may not know that Ian hit the ground heavy at Preston in October last year making a mess of his arm and elbow.

The bad news is that Ian went back under the knife this week as he's not mending. I'm sure you'll join me in wishing Ian a full and speedy recovering and hoping he'll be back on the track.

Here's an update from our own Kuwahero who visited him.

"Went to see our own bionic man this afternoon. He was in good spirits, or should I say morphine. lol. The operation went well but time will tell if it was a success.

Apparently, they had to remove the metalwork and take away part of the radial head. They also had to clean up a lot of scarring, much more than expected. They also discovered puss in the bone, which doesn't sound good. They have cleaned this out and sent swabs to the lab for testing. If they are negative he should be home end of the week.

If they aren't he will have to stay in for two weeks on a IV drip of antibiotics. Not good, so fingers crossed.

He currently has a catheter in his neck feeding an anesthetic block to his arm so it is numb. It is strapped up to a machine that will continually bend and straighten his arm for 48hrs. This is to stop it stiffening, scarring and prevent fluid building up in the joint, as this could cause problems later.

He is still positive and determined to get back riding. He even joked that if he couldn't ride again he was going to get his digger licence and build tracks."

The Good News is that before he went under the knife he picked up his Brit trophy at the British Cycling Awards. More from Kuwahero

"And here he was on Saturday night at the British Cycling Awards with his old pal Sir Chris Hoy and uber fit Victoria Pendleton
