Title: MRD Re-issue!
Post by: gossa on March 18, 2010, 09:06 PM
Hey peeps.

Tim March has left Howies and is tinkering with a few ideas. One is making some bikes, he wants to get some fixie frames made, just stuff in small batches for fun. BUT!!! Today I mentioned Greg Hill doing his re-issues and mentioned to Tim he should do a small run (say 50?) MRD Pros. Now anyone that knows Tim knows he can be a bit weird about the old days but he was pretty interested in it. So I thought i'd through the idea out there, who thinks this would be of interest?

should sell like hotcakes.
tell him to do some mrd pro bars as well, steve ANIMAL will be all over it!
and just what are "fixie" frames i don't get it?

Yeah, I suggested a kit, frame/fork/bars/seatpost. For those that don't know the original MRD pro geometry was 'influenced' by the JMC DY and the bars were pretty much fillet brazed Star Bars.

We had a good chat today, he told me so much funny stuff like Mark 'Whoppa' Watkins got his nickname because of the size of his sh1ts! His dad used to keep a big stick next to the bog to break them up!!!

It would be good to see an up to date MRD Pro doing the rounds, not a retro or re issue but a top flight cromo race frame and fork  :Great_Britain:

does he have any of his old bikes still?
only ask as i live in poole and a few years back bought an old mrd that turned out to be an xl pro.
ANIMAL  has it now but wondered if it was one of his old frames.
i have an mrd pro if he needs to measure up lol

Well Tim and I were really struggling today to think who could build anything as obviously Rickman who built the MRD's are no more. We did however both come up with an option who shall remain nameless for now but local and a great frame builder.

New School MRD, you think that would work?

He still has one of the first ever prototypes made by Birmingham Wheels but not much else. He did say today though that his mum has loads of old stuff like letters, invoices etc. He seemed pretty excited!

I would love a re-issue MRD Pro!

Whist you're chatting to Tim ask him if he has any of the old Badlander decals  ::)

:) New school MRD? If done as an initial ltd edition run, then why not? The originals had some of the cleanest lines ever to grace a frame.Would like to hear from some of out techies if a looptail has any disadvantages compared to straight stays. :daumenhoch:

Well here's a moment i've been hoping would come for a long time. As Steve (ANIMAL) will back up, i am a major fan of MRD, probably as much as Steve, only difference is he has the collection and i have bugger all! :-[ :LolLolLolLol: for Tim to reproduce his line of Pro frames as a re-issue would be brilliant and as the above have said, they will sell mega quick. The thing i'm really interested in is if he'd be interested in making NS race frames, that is something i'd go buy tomorrow if i had the chance! :smitten: :4_17_5:
Title: Re: MRD Re-issue!

I'll pass on your comments mate, it's really just an idea, I think Tim might not realise the potential as the frames didn't sell in big numbers BITD so he's wary. I just want to give him some idea of the demand.

MRD didnt make a cruiser. There were two frames used as team bikes though, a JMC cruiser and a Bassett.

a new school MRD would be great, although Tim's attitude towards the sport and people that gave him a household name doesnt really sit well in my eyes.

Don't know if he would sell many OS Pro repro frames (lots might say they want one but how many cough up is a different matter) but I think he could move a few 531/4130 brazed NS 20" Pro's and 24" Cruisers which could be "influenced" by todays best race frames.

Gashead and Billstup will concur.

Don't know what Tim's views are on oldskool etc but tis a shame he ain't on Rad considering his status/contribution to the UK BMX scene :(

Tim is a pretty misunderstood guy, I think he's actually pretty shy about a lot of stuff. He digs old school stuff, knows a lot from personal experience and has an encyclopedic memory. We were talking about RRS's the other day and quick as a flash he reeled off a load of stuff.  He doesn't go on forums a lot as he knows some muppet will take a potshot at him and he's only human like any of us.

Interesting thoughts though guys, i'll pass it all on.

Tim had a rant on vintage years ago, came across as a bit of a c0ck. BUT, he is a big part of UK BMX history & definatley has passion for BMX, his replies on bmxtalk vouch for that.

It would be cool to have a new school frame from Tim, a race frame not a reissue.  :daumenhoch:

Got to say tho, even tho Tim threw a wobbler he still rules.  :daumenhoch:

Just wish he hadn't done the pecker out photo, always pops up whenever Tim gets a mention.  :LolLolLolLol:

Nope, i'm planning on doing wednesday night gates at bournemouth but that's about it I reckon.  I think people forget what Tim did, he spent everything he had made in BMX on MRD and didn't perhaps get the success he deserved. Anyway, lets not make this thread about the man but the metal!

I think this is really just a case of 'if he did something would peeps buy them'. If there's enough interest I guess the next stage would be get them priced up but he was pretty firm on UK built so I reckon it would be at least £400 to get a decent frame made here.

It was an MRD Pro that got me back into OS BMX 8 years ago it was my first build and still my regular rider to this day,AWSOME Frames :4_17_5: :Great_Britain: I would be defo interested in a re-issue retro or retro inspired new school like the Kappa's would be cool.Saying that though if it was priced around £400 that would blow my interest out of out of the water.Maybe if it was supplied in an un-finished Raw state that would keep down production and retail costs and make for some really creative builds.
On an intresting note about 5 years ago when my Pro was going through one of it's many tranformations, in my search for some Nos MRD decals I contacted Alan Woods and he asked me if mine was a XL (which it is not) as Tim was looking for one to use in one of Alans Old School race events!

Following on from Clives thread. I think it highly unlikely i will make any retro bikes of any kind. Clive mentioned it to me as GHP were doing some but i really have very little that's good to say about the motivations i personally might have for doing a re issue. I like the idea that whats out there is out there and that's it. I have just found some frame stickers so that will help the owners of MRDs to at least get the right decals on their bikes and i have also unearthed some new (old) race plates. Apparently me mentioning that they are for sale on this site will incur a cost so this post might be taken down. As for making something new, more than likely. What will it be? i'll let you know when i know.

just stumbled onto this thread. id luv a mrd frame set and you just cant seam to find one. so for me the idea of the mrd pro frame set beeing remade or influencing a retro build is good to hear. id defo have one.  as was said earlier you didnt see many bitd so a re issue is a great idea. maybe get tim to see them on radbmx , take deposits and see if people are willing to put their money weere the mouths are ?

why not do this.....
anyone who wishes to pay-pals a tenner into an account.
they decide on a newschool pro xxxxxxxxxxxl frame to steal the dimensions from -to jig off.
you mimic the rear drop out, looptail of the mrd
run a modern sized seat tube, but still over extend it like the old
maybe use a machine mid bb, rather than a euro.
maybe run a internal head tube.

then have it made in reynolds 531, giving curtis bikes the nod to filled or fillet braise it together.

do the forks with the mrd drop

have it chromium plated by the guy on here

some one design the decals on here.

build it up into a rider, then tell Mr MRD he has to come and collect it at mk11 in person

job done.
