Post by: martylaa on May 17, 2010, 08:18 AM

i maybe well wrong here.....but i'm guessing the original finish was deliberately masked off on the dropouts so it didn't get chipped or break when the wheels get tightened?

just a theory though as i know fook all about em  ;D

isn't it a kind of laquer over chrome finish?  all finishing over the top of chrome comes off very easy i'm afraid....tis a very delicate finish which is why hardly any i've seen are pristine.  lovely looking though  :daumenhoch:

The silver areas on the rear and fork dropouts is the standard Chrome base prior to the Smoke being applied (it was for effect more than anything else). A tacky substance was applied to the areas (type of masking) so not to create a too course edging because the coating (six coats of blue-black paint and four coats of clear, then baked) had a tendancy to chip. The masking could then be removed without impacting the smoke paint. :daumenhoch:

Here's the drop outs on my HLT

(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/tt63/louisdog/001-8-2.jpg)   (http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/tt63/louisdog/002-5-1.jpg)

the radius is 13mm or the size of a 2p piece
i used this to score round with a very sharp scalpel and then used a steel rule, then picked off the laquer leaving the chrome and a perfect edge
forks are the same but 12.5mm use a 10p , hope this helps chap  :daumenhoch:
