Bought an TA last year that needed rechroming in order to restore it to something like its former glory. Re-chroming is quite pricey as a lot of you know, so it took a while to save up for it.
Got the frame back a few weeks ago from Hampshire Electro Plating in Southampton. Their website is: www.hepcoltd.co.uk I think they did a good job given the frame was badly corroded to begin with. A member on here recommended them as there no platers up here in Scotland. Long live www.radbmx.co.uk ;)
Got all the parts to build it except wheels, don't know if I should run my Arayas that need rebuilding or new Skyway Graphites.

looks good steve :daumenhoch: how much did it cost? as i got two i need doing ;) have you managed to keep the knurling on the drop outs?
-
thats sweet steve , sell it me please :daumenhoch:
-
I thought I would get asked the cost for the work sooner or later. It cost £160 (including VAT and delivery charge of £16). Some other suppliers quoted £200, so their price is not too bad. I think if you got it done cheaper the quality may not be as good.
The guys at HEP are experts and have done restoration work of the Royal Yacht Britannia for example. Communication by email was good too and quoted quickly about other items I was going to get done. Overall their service was very good.
RE the dropouts: They were in very good condition to begin with so the knurling is still there, and you can still read the skyway name stamped on them.
THIS FRAME AIN'T FOR SALE – SORRY!

that looks sweet stevo i have had parts done there before as i am local to them, there work is spot on ,did you know they plated curtis frames back in the day also rickman freestylers

spokes on a skyway?
Yes I know, Tuffs especially Graphites would be the right choice for that Bob Medrano / Andy Paterson tribute bike, but spoked wheels on TA look great. Like this one!

That is one serious chrome job, and looks the biz. Just had a f&f done which cost £200 so that's a good deal. :daumenhoch:

defo spokes on a TA
i never though i would say this.
but looking at them pictures.
im getting swayed towards spokes on mine :D.
-
I suppose it depends if your looking at a race bike or freestyle bike. I personally prefer tuffs, but for a race bike i would go for spoked wheels
-
A little spoke-age ;)

nice daz 8).
-
ta's look good any colour and any wheels.
-
Thanks for the props about the re-chrome job fellas.
After seeing other member's TA's with spoked wheels, I think I will fit them on mine. Its going to be a racing bike anyway rather than freestyle. Not sure what hubs to go for, sealed Suzue's, Suntour, Shimano's?
-
I've recently changed my wheels and fitted white Ukai rims with blue Shimano DX hubs

If your building your TA as a race bike . . . go for spokes . . . you won't regret it ;)
Cheers

That chrome job is nice. My TA needs a re chrome. May give HEP a call. Race TA's need spokes, unless of course u've a nice pair of graphites :)
-
Stevo ,
Go with Arayas for deffo . (My bro ran Araya Aero's bitd on his TA ) .
How good is the chrome work around the bottom bracket , is it a consistent finish ?. (The BB area proves to be a bit tricky sometimes) .

I need my TA rechroming too. Did they strip it for you?
i wonder if they will do a discount for a job lot of bikes?
It may be worthwhile to ask. PM me who wants there bike done and I will contact them to find out if we can get a discount.

no probs si with chrome ,dont think i can make wheels day :-\
-
MATTDUB: The finish around the bottom bracket is ok. They also chromed inside the BB a little bit, so I hope the bearings fit. :-\
This frame was badly corroded in certain areas, especially on the rear triangle around the welds, and HEP's didn't polish it out as weill as hoped.
Perhaps I didn't emphasise this when I placed the order. If any of you use HEPs and your frame need this tell them. Probably charge extra though.
JIMWISE 68: Yeah they stripped the old chrome off, but I removed the old stickers and made sure it was grease free before sending down.
Looks HEPs will be busy re-chroming member's frames, etc for the next few months! :D
