Hello,i'm looking to buy a mid school bike, and after having had a few years out im now confused as to when Mid school ended :-\
Would like to hear everyones view.Polls just a bit of fun so ignore it if you want, atb Gary
-
I'd hazard a guess at early 00's
Loving the poll you've put up, you could go with all those answers... :LolLolLolLol:

My feeling is 98
-
Great question. I'd have to say 99ish.
-
in my eyes it ended when u.s bottom brackets became an option. before all bikes were were u.s
if it aint u.s bb im not calling it mid school.
just my 2 pence :D
-
when it stopped being underground and became part of the mainstream again. id say 97/98.
-
mid skool died for me when inch and eight bikes came common so 97 98 for me
-
I think its when bikes got lighter again and standard ditched the iconinc gusset on the 250 + jeans got tighter + chrome got real rare ;D, :P - so gradual fade from 98 to 2004, haha, I dunno. So er, when did it start, for me it was 93 - its when I dug out my BMX after being dumped by my then girlfriend, haha - she did me a great favor :P
-
Good answer regarding the euro bb bmxbert. And i think you might be onto one with the tight jeans scenario Scott250 ;D
I was thinking about buying a Volume destroyer, but its really verging on the mid school/new school line for me.Its definately got the weight to be mid, what do you think??

aren't there some NOS ones on the bay for about £30? gotta be worth a punt for sort of dosh :daumenhoch:

My personal opinion is that old, mid, and new are incorrect anyway, i believe we're actually in a forth generation of bmx right now, I'm down with old school, but I think there is an early mid and a late mid. Early being 91/92 up till about 97, with the likes of s&m dirtbikes, homeless mack, Hoffman condors, and the like, then a massive shift in 97 when the standard sta, trailboss, s&m beefed up the dirtbike and holmes, a whole new wave of rider owned companies, t1, fbm, kink, and the like all started releasing frames. This for me ran up until about 03. Then new school made a real headway with companies jumping on the standard bandwagon and using lighter tubing from strengthened metals, smaller chainrings, euro, Spanish, and mid bbs were becomingly widely available. If I had to pick a frame for the cross over point I'd go with the gen2 standard bullitt. The gusset went, air hardened tubing was ripe throughout, and certainly a major key area that dominates new school was the low stand over height of the toptube giving a much more compact frame. There's loads of examples from those years that helped repave bmx, this is just a few examples so don't be offended if I haven't mentioned certain companies

I left at 16 :daumenhoch:

gen's will foresure have to be used as time goes on,we had just the 3 to deal with but now 4 and soon 5 .
-
On reflection, the midschool ended for me when I got married :-\
:LolLolLolLol:

It'll be interesting to see what goes on in gen 5. 24.6646776568" long toptubes, almost twinned up with the downtube like a flatland frame for low standover, 20 x 4.65437646645 tires. Tin foil frames (though unknown have already tried that). 9t chainring.
Or maybe we'll see a full circle going on. Already happening with colour!
-
Good point with the gen's ,as there was so many different variations of popular frames and forks.
-
If your 10 years old its all oldschool. To me putting a name on an era is kinda silly. I mean really, how long can you call it midschool? Whats to come after newschool? We didnt call midschool midschool BITD, it was newschool compared to an 84 Master or a 85GT. If you go to the skatepark by my house, us old guys are the only ones trying to slap a label on eras, all bikes that are over 4 years old are oldschool to kids.
-
Aint got a Clue :P
:LolLolLolLol:
-
What year does old school end, i would say 88-89 but some say 85 :-\ :-\
-
99 for me, right when SE sold out to Fuji :2gunsfiring_v1:

I reckon there's 2 Gens in every category.
Old school theres shiny blue skies uniform Fiola and Dominguez, then burning UKBFA licences anarchy street bikes with stickers and surfwear.
Mid school early dirt bikes S&M replacing battered '88 haro's Condors coming thru, then S&M n Standard taking on A-Head small usa indy firms coming out.
New school 14mm gettin lighter still American, tubes all over, then taiwanese products value completes low seats big bars and low slung scooters.
there's probably more but I'm still recovering from Radchester. haha
-
for me, mid school started when S&M produced the maddog and dirtbike frames in 88, ended around 98/99 when bmx started to expand again
-
For alot of people mid school ended when the 90's ended....But for me it will never end. I love mid school :)

i say mid skool started after 85 86 as the dark days when you used to ride and only a hand full of you riding and you knew everyone when you met up at southbank or meanwhile and there was more skater`s in the parks than bmx . ta`s and ripper`s disppeared as everyone was on freestyle bike`s ( in london that is might be different )
had good time then tho and sometime wish i could go back and do it again

Good point Captain
Some firms were far ahead in the developement stakes like S&M so they would be considered Mid school before the likes of Haro. who didn't produce anything resembling Mid school till much later.
So maybe it's about the firm not the year.
-
The technology has been evolving since day one & bikes released in the early 90's are different to those released in the later 90's. The very term 'mid skool' is something of a misnomer imo...

I personally feel that there are 2 generations of mid school too. It began in 87-88 with S&M, Auburn, Kastan, etc. and the 2nd generation of mid school (93-94) was when everything went to 1 1/8 headtubes and canti/ V-brakes. I'd say the end of mid school would be 98-99.
