Is there anyone out there that used to race NBMXA South Central region back in the early eighties. In the day i would have been competing against the likes of Darren Collins,Lee Stevens and even Sarah Jane-Nichols,every one remembers her!My main haunts were Henley,Reading,Tadley and Wantage.Any of you guys still out there?
-
I raced South Central bitd, I raced against the likes of Stu Diggins, Dave Morris, Rob Stobbart, Jolian Stock etc. I was NBMXA regional no 8 in 82, NBMXA regional no 3 and UKBMX regional no 1 on 20" and UKBMX regional no 2 in cruiser in 83 and UKBMX regional no 1 in both 20" and cruiser in '84. My local track was Bristol, but raced all over as I raced nationals also and nationals only in '85.
Especially remember Wantage track as I had a really bad crash there and split my knee cap in 1/2, bloody hurt I can tell you.
-
yep i raced for runnymede rockets, rode against darren collins, marcus geary, jason atrrill, lee stephens, . whats your name hutchman ?
-
David Brick,rather an unforgettable surname!!
-
How old are you Hutchman?
-
35 years young(feel like 60 some days, not getting enough riding time)
-
wanna get the wife sorted out.
-
Hey Darren, being a Rocket man,i take it you know the Kings,i.e Albert,Carol,Jason and Tara?
-
I am from the SC check out my plate on avatar. Dont

below me.I got no 1 and no 2 in 85.

Yo,Darren,i do remember the name very well.Would be great to see some of the pics some day.I'm still in Henley, but the track got flattened years ago,i still have the J.M.C,at least something survived from back then.My dad took loads of photos when we raced,i'll get him to dig them out.Whats your surname?i reconise you through your helmet.By the way,one of my work collegues says hello...Fuzzynod ring a bell?Dave.
-
darren van den eeden . no 5 south central 87.
-
Hey Darren, yes i do remember now, that explains why you looked fimilar.Have you any plans to meet Mark(Fuzzynod) at Henley skate park at all,he muttered something earlier about it,unless he was on about Santa Pod.
-
You can add me to the roll call (albeit 3 years later than when the thread was alive).
I used to ride Reading Hawks (Tadley) as my local and go to all the regionals.
I was largely rubbish and extremely introverted at the time!!!
Was it Wantage that had the bumpy tarmac'd berms?
-
cant remember the berms, but i can remember that the track was on a left hand bend in the road comming out of Wantage(heading towards Grove??)
-
I was probably 12 at the time and didn't care much for directions. To be honest i'm no different at 36!!!!
Do I remember a track at Standlake or am I making it up? Next to a Banger Racing circuit?
-
Yep,remember Standlake very well, built in an old quarry(or summat)very flat track.
-
I raced NBMXA south central, home club petersfield same as darren Collins, used to ride with him quite a bit, i was the year below with Mike Bags, Steven Hassle etc No4/5 1987/88
i rememeber Wantage :daumenhoch:

Morgan.
I rode for Bournemouth and Solent spitfires.
My bro also rode the same meetings, he is 3yrs younger and his name is Darren.

Sorry Andy, i've just had a look through the results and i cannot find you listed at all. The only one i found listed is T.Morgan racing in Boys 12 years old (as of 1987 results)

I did, crashed my brains out on the 'table top'.......can still remember the terrified expression on my parents faces when I re-surfaced!!
Can't remember much about the trackthough, other than it was pretty narrow?
-
that tabletop was responsable for a broken collar bone,i think thats what killed my confidence for jumping.
-
Glad I wasn't it's only 'victim' :D

my name is richard harvey ;) i've got a few of those old programs and track chats somewhere (i had a rider profile thing in one of them!) and the pre British champs booklet thing with all the regions top 8 rankings for the year
NBMXA South central was a tough region, there were sometimes 1/8ths / 1/4ers etc at regionals for each age group! i cant remember how many riders but from photos theres usually hordes of people surrounding the tracks :daumenhoch:
my first regional ranking was 8 and i made the Derby british champs so was well happy, that was a great buzz to race in that stadium :)
i did ukbmx regionals aswell one year and raced at an unfinished soggy track in Dudley for the British champs anyone remember it?
my home club was petersfield, either had gate practice wednesdays with flood lights or interclub races with gosport then racing every sunday and southsea skatepark visits on saturdays, i'm glad i grew up in the 80's when there were more local facilities/tracks for bmxing kids :daumenhoch:

Hi Richard, looked in my programme and you were listed in boys 13 years old, finishing 4th for that year behind....J.Tye (3rd), C.Wesson (2nd) and Mike Baggs (1st). That year i was in boys 16 years coming in 4th, same as you. Goooood times!! I made the British championships around 86/88 cant remember exactly as i went to Derby twice. I've got a funny feeling that one of those was something other than the British championships. Can you remember?

I raced south central, 83, 84,85, and 86.
started in the 12's did 1 race that year, a few more in 84, 85 road quite a few, and stopped racing late 86 as i started work, started going to the pub regularly and sundays were particularly hard then.
Mainly raced at Bristol, as this was the closest regional track.
Finished 7th in the 85/86 winter series, and got taken out in my semi final at derby, as i drew a heat with 1 gt factory rider, 2 gt factory support and 1 redline factory rider, didnt like me being in 3rd place, and they bunched me in the last berm and took me out, finished in 6th in the end, i was absoloutly gutted.
I remember the long days racing, 3 heats, then 1/8ths, 1/4'ers and semi's.
used to race against Gary Chamlevicz (i think) at 13 he was 6ft 6" with size 15 feet, he was huge compared to most of us.
I used to travel to the Regional's with Nigel Hopkinson (hoppy)
Bristol with the Huge doubles at the start, bath large camel top ,slough doubles in the start that everyone was leval jumping always loads of accidents as track narrowed quickly after the doubles.

Old thread,but....regarding my comment about Nicky Sturgeon..found out from her bro Daniel that Nicky died a few years ago...so if anyone reading this knows them, then i just want this thread to go out as a mark of respect to Nicky and her family.
