Hi all
My build is coming along nicely, I'm currently cleaning the rear tuff before dipping in bleach. As I want to ensure the hubs are protected from bleach this time (the front hub is a dull grey colour now) I am in the throes of taking the sprocket off (it was missing a number of bearings, slipping and wobbly as hell anyway).
I took the front of it off, left handed thread, millions of tiny bearings everywhere... out came two shims and a spring with two teeth on it but now I'm left with this and can't get it off.

I've tried big mole grips, drifting with a protected screwdriver etc but it ain't shifting...
Help!
Thanks again for a fab site everyone.

Have you tried it with the axle out ???
That may be holding it in :-\
:coolsmiley:
-
or just use loads of grease :LolLolLolLol:
i'm not sure if you got a suntour cassette style hub or not, (but if yes, this might help against the wobble:

How did you remove it? Did you use a special tool?
Did it look like this before you removed anything?

Yeh it did, except it's a 16T SIA sprocket. I undid the front race (clearly not the way to go, I've recovered 78 tiny ball bearings so far...)
So I took the toothed wheel off and what's left is the bottom bearing race. I think it's screwed on by looking at the fit. I might just buy a replacement and leave the old race in place, it's in pretty good nick.

try clamping it in a vice and use wheel to turn it,if that fails the only other way is
to get some 5mm plate and carefully weld it on to the remaining
freewheel then unscrew while still hot and it should come off easily ;)
-
be carefull though if you crush it in a vice, you might crush the hub, i'd try some big fook-off stilsons carefully with loads of leverage...
-
You should have used one of these:

What's that and how's it work moose?
-
It's a freewheel removal tool and I find the best way to use them is to clamp the tool in a vice, locate the 'pins' in the slots of the freewheel and turn the wheel.
Not sure it'll work now you've destroyed the freewheel :LolLolLolLol:
And you need to get the right one (2-pin or 4-pin).

A big hammer :LolLolLolLol:
-
it was a flip-flop style hub btw not cassette
-
Lol Moose, it's nit that bad, it all goes back together ok, I have all the bearings that were left in it and can screw it back together ok, I want to get it off so I can protect the hub when I put the wheel in bleach.
I can't see where that removal tool would go (ahem). Where on the freewheel are the pins for that tool?

screw it back together ( dont worry about the bearings ) take it to the lbs and they will have the correct removal tool to get it off. doubt if they will charge you if you buy summat ;)

A big hammer :LolLolLolLol:
n chisel :LolLolLolLol:
-
lol..... whats going on here ? :LolLolLolLol:
-
In the picture of the freewheel I posted you'll see two rectangular 'slots' on the inside, that's where the tool locates :daumenhoch:
-
I misread it at first and thought it was a coaster hub and you wanted it all out :-[ although it now looks like a suntour cassette hub :-\
Clamp it in a vice as Phil says ;)
:coolsmiley:
-
NO NOT cassette ....... flip-flop or whatever it's called, but it's not cassette, it turns out :D
-
This is how it should be done.

Say, you did not take that freewheel thing, that Moose's picture shows, apart? ...you managed to get that off in its entirety, right?
-
:LolLolLolLol: Your a gent Moose, I will owe you several pints when I've finished this bike :)
I've put mine back together to show the lack of removal tool slots, I have to destroy the freewheel to get it off, a la the second link you sent.

Thanks for the chisel recommendation but won't be taking a chisel to my tuff II's :)

aha, destructive removal LOL
stepp 7. "Dispose of the freewheel parts and install a new one. "2 :LolLolLolLol:

Then Phil was right from the off :daumenhoch:

now you have it back together this is the best way to remove it,tack weld a piece
of bar across freewheel making sure it won't turn, then use bar as lever and freewheel will come off,
do it while it's still hot as this will help it ;)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/y77/sawzall717/IMG_1555.jpg)

forgot to say make sure wheel is covered up when welding as weld splatter will stick to wheel :(

....meanwhile at the workshop

Lol, love the pic! I take it it's a left handed thread and I'm basically taking the while thing off the same thread the race goes onto?

".........6. The inner body is threaded clockwise onto the hub shell. Look on inner body for two flats created by pawls. Grab the body firmly on these flats in a vise and turn wheel counter-clockwise. ................." (http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=46)

Thanks everyone, the buggers off and I only skinned my pinky (finger). I took the cog of, popped the mole grips on the bottom race, put that into the work bench, turned clockwise and squashed my finger. I then threw away the crappy one and now perusing replacements on flea bay.
Thanks all for your help, especially sawzall, fischflo and moose. Moose, I saw your sig once state "Trust Moose", I did and all was good. ;D
